broken wheel studs

Dealer snapped two wheel studs on the wife's car when rotating the tires.

They replaced them for free and said that this "happens a lot."

Is this a common occurrence, and they just chose to told me when others would have said nothing?

Do I need to check the torque on the wheel nuts (I only ask because I'll have to drive into town to get my torque wrench back).

It happens when idiots tighten down lug nuts all the way with an impact gun.

I always spin my lugs on with the impact gun on setting #1 til I get resistance. Then torque them to proper spec with the torque wrench.

Yeah, for sure sounds like someone got a little overzealous with the impact gun. You'd think they would've stopped when they broke the first one...

Being how I had just had to spin a cpl of sets of wheels around yesterday I watched the guys do this so I said please tighten em down snug then torque please ! 2 sets of wheels 2 4runners not one & my 05 has spacers so I had ordered xtra studs from motorsporttech . It happens more than we know I'm sure . Like you said landcruiser torque em your self !

If they broke some, what do you want to bet that the others are stressed too? I would consider making them replace them all.

Impact wrenches are for removing as far as I am concerned. I always hand thread them back on then torque, of course I don't work in a tire shop either.

Isuzu and Mitsubishi used to be bad about this. They probably cross-threaded them as well. Never really saw an issue with toyotas in the 10+ years I worked in the pickup truck accessory field.
