BudBuilt Light Steel 1/8 Gas Tank Skid better than OEM?

BudBuilt Light Steel 1/8 Gas Tank Skid better than TE OEM?

Looking to upgrade my Limited gas tank skid.

I am trying to save on weight and do not do heavy duty rock crawling. Note that I already have a set of Asfir skids installed but need to address the gas tank.

BudBuilt has a "Light Steel 1/8 gas tank skid". Is that 1/8th" skid any more beefy than the stock TE skid? The BudBuilt is more than twice as much money.

I would go for the Aluminum but apparently those could take months to get.

Not sure of the weight of the stock Trail skid, but here is what Lisa gave me on the gas tank skids they have at BudBuilt:

3/8th Steel: 66lbs
1/8th Steel: 45lbs
Aluminum: 33lbs

Any other options or ideas? Should I just go with a TE skid?

$400 is a lot if you don't do any heavy duty rock crawling, I understand if you have already dented your stock tank skid, just wait until you need to replace it and see if they go down in price.

Thanks but I feel kind of naked with the SR5/LE partial coverage gas tank skid... the back half of the tank is just bare.

So I either feel I need to go with the TE full coverage, or fork out the johnny and go more burly... but not too burly due to my weight concerns.

Get all your armor and don't worry about the weight for about a year. Because when the trd supercharger is released for purchase. That will take care of your rigs weight problem. Looking at your signature, I see TRD supercharger in the near future.

The 1/8" will be better than a stock skid. The weight difference between the 1/8" and 3/16" is 21 pounds. That is only a 12 pack or so. Seriously if you are going to enjoy wheeling, you don't want to flinch every time you hear a skid touch a rock. Go for the 3/16". It's obvious that you have done some rock crawling (seeing what you did to the stock plate). Unless you hated wheeling Moab and or rocks, again, go for the 3/16"

(I'm sure that the standard skid is 3/16" and not 3/8". A 3/8" plate would weigh about 140 pounds)

Thanks for clearing that up... yes, 3/8" would be SUPER burly!

Exactly this.

I went from the stock TE skid to the standard BB skid and don't regret it at all. My stock skids were all beat to crap when I took them off and after doing a pretty serious rock crawling trip the BBs don't have anything worse than some of the rattle can paint job I did scraped off.
