BudBuilt

So, as I mentioned, I picked-up my bump-out sliders from Bud today. They *just* fit in the rear cargo area with the seats down. They were already packed-up and ready to ship because that's what they were originally expecting. But, I called Ducmonsta (since he's the one I ordered through) and arranged a pick-up because I'm in Charlotte for the next few weeks and I'm always interested in seeing fabrication shops and meeting the guys who make the stuff I like. Duc, it's a good thing I picked them up because his son admitted to originally packing two passenger side sliders by mistake!

Here they are:

And unpacked:

The powder coat on the sliders is really nice and textured similar to the finish we have on our Bajaracks or Gobi racks/ladders. I was thinking that it would be a smooth powder coat, but I really like the texture. Brock, you can see that all of my welds are contiguous, so I would definitely contact Bud about your set.

Next, I removed my rocker panels using the same procedure that Antman outlines here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/92013-antmans-thread-25.html#post100302. It's literally a 5 minute process on each side. As you can see, it looks like total and complete dog sh*t without the rocker panels. My plan was to get the Shrockworks finishing panels at some point, but it doesn't look like they'll clear the sliders, so I have to figure-out another solution.

Those wondering if it is possible to install sliders without a proper jack, jackstands, or a lift the answer is a resounding yes:

For those that are curious, the logs were holding up one end of the slider while I maneuvered the other end and threaded a few bolts. The broom was used as a lever to jack the sliders higher up on the frame once I had a couple of bolts on. The 1x8's were used to hold up the Shrockworks gas tank skid plate. :art:

Installation of the sliders is dead simple once you get everything in place. Bud provides a bag full of heavy duty hardware that threads directly into the frame. So, wherever you see a threaded hole that lines-up with the holes in the sliders you simply put a bolt and washer in and tighten it down! One issue, though: The Budbuilt bolt-on sliders are NOT compatible with the Shrockworks gas tank skid plate. I've got a full set of Shrockworks skid plates, and there were no issues on the passenger side. However, on the driver's side the mounting holes for the Budbuilt sliders and Shrockworks skid plates do not line-up. You can clearly see the setup I was working with, so I didn't want to attempt drilling anything given the precarious situation I was already dealing with. So, I simply removed the Shrockworks skid plate for now, and Ducomonsta will grind or drill as appropriate when I get back to DC.

On a side note, Ducmonsta and I used Facetime on our iPhones so I could show him what I was dealing with and get his advice about drilling. Obviously Ducmonsta is a fellow T4Rer, so that's probably half of it, but he's really more like a very knowledgeable good buddy rather than my mechanic/service shop. The customer service he and his folks provide is nothing short of amazing. Coincidentally, Joneseyyy's truck was in his shop today getting an install done and because I was on Facetime with Duc I got to see Joneseyyy's install before he did! :D Anyway, all of you jokers who aren't close enough to Ducmonsta are seriously missing-out.

In true phillyd2 style, here are the left-over parts:

And here they are installed!

Sliders look great!!

So the answer to my question is no. You had to remove your rockers for the sliders to fit. Wonder why he has regular and limited sliders listed on his site  I guess my search continues...

Maybe it has some routing for the XREAS lines incorporated into the design? Not sure, but based on the angles of the ones I have I wouldn't guess you'd get away with keeping your rocker panels on.

EDIT: ... without cutting, of course...

I called Bud today about my order and he mention you visiting his garage. He has my sliders done but been so overwhelm that they just need to send them out.

He did want me to pass word that he really appreciate this forum for keeping him in business and said that even though he is overwhelm with all the work he will keep on trying to get the product out as soon as he can.

Great pictures and I can't wait to get my sliders as well.

It is for the XREAS and KDSS lines. Most sliders you need to remove the rocker covers. Rocker covers are weak anyway, throw em away! LOL

Ya I can tell by looking at yours that would be a no go. I still want a set of his skids so when I call I'll double check with him. I'll post an update after I speak to him.

Again thanks bro :thumb3: Your truck is looking good, I like the choices you've made so far :boink:

I agree they are weak but they do serve the purpose of finishing off the rocker so it looks good. I would rather go with the RR sliders, which I don't like, than remove the rocker panel. Or buy Bud's and see if they can be modified to hang a bit lower.

On a side note I may be driving down to the Atlanta area first of July maybe I'll go visit with Bud also :D

FYI:
That broom was so successful with the install, he started his own business out on the road...

Lima-
I can't tell you how much this made my day. It's been pretty hectic at the shop recently and to come home (finally) after a HUGE day was nice to hear/read some kind words. I actually didn't leave the shop until 7:45 (we close at 6:00). This is one of the reasons I LOVE what I do. There was a 3rd gen that was in the shop a couple of days ago who had a Gobi with a 30"SR Rigid and D2s installed on his ARB bumper. He called today to specifically thank Joey (my tech) for the wonderful job he did on his truck. He mentioned that his daughter asked him whose truck was in his driveway. He laughed and had to remind her that it was "Daddy's". It was a totally different ride.

I truly want to be able to help in anyway that I can or the shop for that matter. I appreciate your patience when it comes to intermixing manufactures parts. Especially when it comes to aftermarket products. There is no "application" chart that allows us to figure these things out ahead of time. Rest assured, we'll get that gas tank skid/slider situation taken care of. I've actually already talked to a couple of the guys and I think we've already come up with a solution.

In all seriousness, THANK YOU, for allowing my shop to take care of anything you needed or help with any situations that come up.

He's got TONS of stuff going on, and he admitted to being swamped...

Bud's hired a new woman named Lisa that is basically handling all of the customer service and order tracking.

...lots of sliders for 5th Gens sitting in boxes waiting to be shipped...

One set of those must have been mine - I just got an email from FedEx that they picked my order up from Bud today. Delivery is scheduled for Friday!!

My wait from order date to shipped date will have been around 5 weeks, including powder coating, excluding FedEx time. When I ordered I was quoted 2-3 weeks, so just FYI for anyone that is looking.

Due to the delay, I did call during the five weeks to touch base. Lisa seems to be on top of everything. She always knew who I was, what the status was, etc. Also, she answered the phone every time I called (about 3 including ordering, status, etc.).

Now I just need to set an appointment with Bud the Broom for Friday night...

:reddance:

@Ducmonsta - Definitely not your fault! The thought didn't even cross my mind. I would have been surprised as hell if everything worked perfectly. I have no doubt you guys will be able to fix me up right.

@Everyone else - Bud asked me to send him some pictures of the finished install because he only had a few pictures of the sliders installed on a black truck (black on black = tough to see), so I sent him the pics I posted in this thread a little while ago. Just got an email from him thanking me for the pics and asking for a picture of the Shrockworks skid and slider discrepancy (I'll have to get those when I get to Duc's shop). He also confirmed that he'll be at the Summit in July! My sweet talking must have worked...

Lima,

I was looking at your pics. Do you have spidertrax spacers installed, or just the 285 tires?

Looks good .. I'm between BB or RRO. The FJC wheels look great .. that little extra hint to gunmetal finish gives them an awesome look over the stock TE wheels IMO
