Bug magnent or ironic timing of purchasing?

Hey everyone. I'm new here. I'll post some info on my purchase in the next couple of days including pics, but for right now I've got a weird question. I bought my brand new 2012 Salsa Red Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 yesterday. Today I drove it about 90 miles both ways on the interstate on a visit back to see my family. On the drive, I hit more bugs than I could have ever imagined... I don't know if it it just unseasonably warm in Oklahoma and there were a ton of bugs out, or if the aerodynamics of this vehicle causes every bug in a 100ft radius to suck into hitting the windshield.

Anyway, to the point, is this a known issue? I've read quite a few pages of threads, the problems page, and even did a search for the bug guard info, but didn't find any mention of this. I switched from a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 and never really noticed that amount of bug carnage.

So... Regardless, I'm now thinking of buying a bug guard... I've never had a bug guard on my car before, not really a huge fan of the appearance on most cars, but thanks to some of the mod threads I got a chance to see what they look like on the 5th Gen 4Runners and I'm okay with the look as long as it does what it's title says it is (Guards my dang windshield from bugs). I've read some reviews, but could only find comments on appearance and not functionality. Anyone have any suggestions on which bug guards function well?

Yes and Yes. Going to be a lot a bugs this year. Going to have to get used to it. Driving a vehicle with a windshield more like a picture window in your home, will catch more of those bugs, rocks etc. Going to have tgo get used to that also.

NONE of the bug shields out there will do much, if anything, to protect the windshield. They do, however, do a good job of protecting the front edge of your hood, an even better job of removing money from your wallet. They also seemingly attract girl(s)............................bugs.

^^ Exactly, you're driving a brick. I notice lotsa bugs on the front too, not just the windshield.

I've read comments that the hood bugshields are not too effective - fugly imo.

I like the way they look, but to each their own. The real advantage of them is front hood protection because they def don't stop bugs :splat:
 
yeah, I hit tons of bugs now, moreso than with my 97. the trip to Nebraska last weekend, I hit so many, the windshield had to be cleaned when I got to Lincoln then when I got back to Tulsa, it was awful....just washed it last night and couldn't (or didn't want to spend that much time doing it....) get all of them off the front end, got them off the windshield with this stuff safelite glass gave me a month ago, sprayed it on and let it soak for a few minutes and they wiped right off.....

I've got them on the roof, the side mirrors are awful, the grill, the entire front end.....just not something I thought about when I bought it.....

NO don't get Salsa Red! That is the worst color for bugs, it's an attractant. It is called that color for a reason. Bugs see it and think it is a big chunky pile of salsa and dive right toward it! Try green or orange, the color of bug repellent cans. They know what that stuff it. It reminds me of the story of the guy that accidentally mounted his deer whistles backwards, and hit 5 deer his first day out!

For some reason I got worst bugs on Cape Cod in May few years ago. But I had Ford Escape at that time, it was late evening and after 30 min driving and I could hardly see through my windshield.
 
I made a 230 mile journey and here was the result:

I've noticed a ton of rocks always seem to fly up and nail my windshield. I guess that is because i'm driving around in a a tool shed shaped truck.

I killed my first Florida State Bird (aka massive mosquito) on the way home from the dealership tonight. It was still twitching on the passenger side mirror.
