So as I posted in another thread, I backed the left rear corner into a wall and scraped the rear bumper cover. The quote I got was $930 with insurance or $870 if I pay out of pocket. I've done some painting in the past as a hobby working on my '56 Chevy. It has been about 8-10 years since I've touched my paint gun and I threw out all of my extra paint and solvents about 5 years ago. I decided to stop by the auto body supply store after getting the estimate and materials came to about $150, plus another $50 for misc, mask, light, etc...
This is my first attempt at a spot repair. Here is the damage:
Sanded it down to get the scratches and rough edges out:
Some Primer to fill deep scratches, sanded, re-primer, and repeat:
Ended up doing a larger area to cover some other scratches, had to stop myself as the area kept growing as I found more chips and scratches:
Redid the tape to go beyond the base coat and applied 3 coats of clear. I should have masked a larger area here and left the edges to have fanned out a little and not worried about getting a good finish. Instead I painted right up to the tape even though it was rolled and got a pertty goo lip I need to deal with now:
here you can see the edge I need to wet sand down and bufff, we'll see how that goes. Hopefully I don't end up redoing the whole thing.
the match looks pretty decent out in the light:
If I had to do it again I would paint all the way to the top, front and bottom edge so that I only have a vertical masking line on the rear of the car to deal with. I was too lazy to unbolt the bumper and in the beginning I wasn't planning on doing an area much larger than what I had masked in the first pic. I'll post some updates on my progress or regression.

I commend you on owning black.... I tried, I really did. In the end I traded in the black for Mag grey.
