Bump's '90 4Runner

Haven't really done too much. I've rebuilt the steering box and tapped it for hydro assist. The holes are just plugged for now tho. I've also started cutting the plates to move the steering box forward. Hoping to have that done before next weekend so I can pull the drivetrain out and get everything fully welded up. Then I can start putting stuff in permantly. Here's a few pics...

This part fought me as you can see by the messed up holes. I was so aggravated I almost scraped this box


The little balls really wasn't that bad. I just fed them thru the two holes where the split tube is mounted

Here's the box mocked in place. It's a tight squeeze to get the drag link between the crank pully and tie rod. Just another issue I'm dealing with because I'm using the gm auto with no body lift lol


I also mounted the B&M shifter. I wanted it in front of the tcase shifter but there's no room. Kinda messes me up if I ever run dual tcases but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.




I also got my radiator in. It's a universal 22x19 from speedway. I'll get it mounted after I pull and reinstall the drivetrain.


I did a little flex testing too. Still had some up travel to go but I stopped here.




 
I pulled the motor out and welded up the motor mounts and steering box mounts. I also added a few gussets to the motor mounts. The motor is back in now and I have started mounting the accessories to it.









My next move will probably be to building new cross member for the gas tank to mount to and radiator mounts. I also plan on sending off the PCM and getting it reprogrammed.
 
I guess I should update this a little....

I installed a GM fuel pump in the Toyota tank. I just cut the end off the factory Toyota bracket and used a hose clamp to hold on the new GM pump.


I built a new throttle cable bracket to use the factory Toyota cable


I built a new crossmember for the gas tank. I also gave the tank a fresh coat of paint




Before I put the tank in, I moved from rear spring hangers back a little and added the AAL to the 63s


I made up the new fuel lines. I took the Toyota piece that fed the motor spliced new 3/8 FI hose on it. Then I flared the end of the GM hard line a little and used FI clamps to hold the hose on. I hooked the Toyota end directly the to fuel filter. It runs over the trans to the back of the motor.


I had to modify the driver side header to fit. I also cut the emissions ports off both headers and painted them with high temp paint.




I picked up a factory GM computer mount and bolted it down. It ended up fitting pretty good. I also sent the computer to LT1swap.com to have him program it.




Then I started on the wiring. First was to thing out the IH1 and IH2 Toyota plugs. I found out that I have a weird model 4runner. I have found two different factory Toyota EWDs (one for a 1990 and one for a 1995) and neither one match mine correctly, but I think I have it lined out.


Then I went to work on the GM harness. Here it is spread out on the table.

I then mocked it in the engine bay to get my routed and lengths figured out


Back on the table to shorten about 45 wires going to the gm computer


After shortening those wires. Now its ready to build the new fuse block


Back in with the new fuse block. Im going to loom it after I test fire the motor. I bought braided wire loom. Should look good.
 
Got some flexible radiator hoses. The first one I got for the lower was too short. Hopefully the one I have now will work, but I wont really know until its running.




I have welded up the front spring hanger and painted the front end. I also got the transmission cooler mounted up.


I built a fan shroud for the radiator and got it all installed.


That pretty much gets me to where Im at today. Im going to be pretty busy over the next month with work, so I probably wont get to fire it up until after that. Im getting closer tho.
 
I finally had a little time this weekend to work on it.

I built a gauge panel. Im still waiting for my trans temp gauge to come in. Im not planning go running a head unit, just using my phone or mp3 player directly to an amp.



I got my power steering lines and cooler installed.







I got a few other little things done also that really are worth mentioning lol. I plan to start this thing up Easter weekend, if not before.
 
Nice work! What will you do for front shock mounts? Keep an eye out for frame cracks around the engine mounts, That frame web isn't as substantial there as one would think.

Thanks. Yea I wish I would have plated the engine mounts. Ive seen several ppl not plate it and be fine tho. I will be keeping a close eye on it.

As for shock mounts, I will be using the TG shook hoops. I do plan to plate them tho.
 
Well I spent a little time out in the shop this weekend, and this happened:



Don't mind the vibrating noise. That's the gopro vibrating on the battery.

Thanks. It was definitely music to my ears lol. I just went back and looked. I drove the 4runner into the shop on 4/1/14 to start pulling the 3.slo. Almost a year later, its finally is making noise again.

Now its time to get this thing drivable.
 
Well Im getting a random misfire code. So I checked the headers with a temp gun and the #3 is a lot colder than the rest. I pulled the plug and it don't seem to be getting fuel. After doing a little research and looking at things on the truck, Im starting to think the spider injection system is having issues. I need to do a little more reading on how to exactly determine if that's the cause tho. If it is, then Im going to keep working on getting it drivable then I will change the injection system.
 
Well I managed to pull the wiring harness out and get the braided loom mostly installed. I need to pick up some more tape to finish it up.



I ordered the majority of the parts to do the rear disk swap. Brakes will probably be the next thing I tackle.
 
Well I finished up the harness and installed it back in the 4runner. I decided to fire it up again to see if I could figure out what was wrong with my new oil pressure gauge. After it started, I noticed it seemed to be running a lot smoother than before. I check all the header tubes with a heat gun and sure enough, it was firing on all cylinders. Im not sure what the problem was before, but as of now its gone. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

Now its time to get this rear axle setup and the brakes installed. Maybe Ill be able to drive it around the yard in a few weeks.

I started on the rear disk brake conversion. Im using Isuzu Rodeo calipers and Montero sport rotors. Ive read that the rotors worked with no mods, but I had to drill the wheel studs holes out to 9/16" for them to slip all the way over the shoulder on the studs. I have the templates made for the brackets. Im going over to a guys house this evening to cut them out since my torch is out of commission at the moment.





Seeing as how I had to remove the hood latch to fit my trans cooler, here are my new hoods pins...



I also figured out the problem with my oil pressure gauge...I had the sending unit hooked up wrong. With the way its mounted, I could really read which of the two plugs was the correct one. I hooked it up according to what I thought the instructions told me, but apparently I was wrong. I swapped the plug and it worked fine.
 
Time for an update...

Finished up the rear brakes




Installed a proportioning valve for the rear brakes


Built an intake out of 3" PVC




I found out the used 4.88 3rd member I bought wasn't in as good of shape as the pics the guy sent me before he shipped it, so I decided to rebuild it. So far Ive tore it down, installed the Spartan locker, and put new carrier bearings. I still need to get a bearing splitter to get the pinion bearing off tho. I plan to to do that pretty soon.




I installed my hood pins. Unfortunately I couldn't used the poly bushings. So I built some stainless plates to rivet to the hood.










I built a new rear driveshaft. We installed the CV joint off the front driveshaft on the rear driveshaft.










After I bolted the driveshaft in, this happened...


Now its time to finish up the little items and get this thing streetable.
