Busted key fob case

Hey guys, I am usually pretty inventive when it comes to fixes like this but I am wondering if you guys have a better idea. Soehow my Key FOB snapped off the keychain taking the mounting ring and stud with it. I am at a loss on how to fix it other than epoxying in a zip tie and then just securing it back to my keys. Anyone else have any fixes for this issue?

I've been in the same boat for years. Getting a new remote would be wasteful since the electronics inside are still good and because it like 80 bucks... no thanks.

Mine is held together by electrical tape and slowly disintegrating. If someone would make some reproduction cases I would buy it ASAP.

Just cut the round piece off and superglued it to the fob. It's been holding strong for a few months now

Update: I called around and apparently noone makes the old design as the plastic was weak. (who knew?) Thus if you want to fix this thing, its either diy with superglue, or new scion style remote and reprogram it. Costs about $75 plus shipping. Im thinking superglue and zip tie tonight!

The lady on the phone did offer me a stylish leather case i could slip over my remote. So Gay sure... thanks...

I've searched everywhere.... it seem no one wants to make replacement cases for these remotes.

I did find 1 thing though.

Probably not the most factory looking thing, but has anyone ever tried this? For $15 bucks it would be a good buy if they actually work.

The clips that hold mine together broke, so I wrapped it in 3M Dinoc Carbon Fiber. It heat shrinks and works great, going on 8 months now without an issue.

Came this way...

When I bought my 1998 T4R used, it came with two remotes, both busted out, but both "repaired" in the same way... Seems like it is some sort of super hard epoxy resin, and they drilled it out for the larger screw to pass through the metal loop...

Same issue over here, i used a 2 part plastic epoxy from home depot that worked great. I also cleaned it up a lil with my dremel.

Nothing worked well until this......they make neoprene "protectors" or covers for key fobs.

It doesn't look like the neoprene is strong enough to hold the fob on a key ring but it DOES work. The key fob covers cost about 5 bucks and my first one lasted 2 years.

epoxy and fiberglass string work well. Of course I build model airplanes and have this stuff on hand.

First put a new battery in even if it does not need one because once you do this fix it would have to be cut apart to get to the battery.

put a gob of epoxy on the spot, ball up the figerglass and add more epoxy and let dry to a solid hard ball then just drill it out and presto good as new.

just ugly but hey mine works that way just fine.

I just ordered a new one off ebay for like $25 shipped, works perfect but different fob. The first one didn't work, wrong frequency or something. I checked the fob and gave him the model # for it, he shipped a new one and it works great 1/12 years later.

If people want to know the seller I will dig through my email to find him. If mine ever breaks I will be contacting him again.

For less than the cost of 1 replacement fob you can just get a new keyless entry system. My bro-in-law works at CarToys and installed one of these for me -
Prestige APS45N

He installed that and a new bluetooth / MP3 HU in under an hour.

No that wasn't the one I used, his name was mykeyless. The fob is exactly the same as the one in your link though, that one is a fair bit cheaper as well. His reviews are good enough to where I might try that one. The one I got was right at $30 all said and done.

Busted Key Fob

Hey guys, if you haven't taken care of your key fobs I have another possible solution. Mine had the same problem of the broken plastic that originally held the chain. I looked around at auto zone and oreilly's and found a small square key fob surround (at autozone). It was much smaller than my key fob so when I eventually stretched it over the sides it made a nice, tight fit. The new case was a bit clunky when I put it directly on my keychain so I found a sweet little blinded out dollar sign keychain at oreilly's. I took off the ugly dollar sign and put it on my keys. It has held up for about two months now, it's not too big and bulky in my pocket, and it altogether cost me less than 10 dollars. I hope this helps out someone. I'll try and post pics later. This iPad apparently doesn't allow it.

Broken Key FOB

I just recently motivated myself to search for a way to fix the remote fob for my '96 4Runner and came across this thread... I doubt anyone is still paying attention to this thread, but just in case...

I found this on Amazon that looks like it would be very useful for repairing a broken fob...Amazon.com: The Broken Car Remote Case Repair Solution: Car Electronics

Not wanting to pay the shipping -- I simply fashioned my own. I used picture hanging wire and basically looped it around one side of the fob (carefully pushing the 'wire' into the channel) then put the fob back together normally...needed to apply a little more pressure due to the addition of the wire in the channel surrounding the key fob. After tightening the fob screw, I now have a functional remote again (just remember to leave a loop exposed that is large enough to get a key ring into it). Sorry, I don't have a picture right now. If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll upload a picture.
