Buying a new 4Runner and MSRP

It is getting time for a new 4runner. It will be a Trail with KDSS or a Limited. Very tough decision for me and I have spent considerable time researching here.

But here is my question. The following link reflects research of the discount off of MSRP that is given in various parts of the country.

The Top 10 Cheapest Places To Buy A Car

The net of the article is that in the best locations to purchase a car a buyer can receive 8-10% off MSRP. When buying a vehicle is it realistic to use this information as a negotiating goal? Can I go into a dealer and be satisfied knowing I received 8-10% off msrp?

Or are we bound to other conditions, such as the fact that a 4runner is really not a mainstream vehicle but a niche vehicle. That various configurations of the 4runner are even more niche (trail with KDSS) and there is no way to get that kind of discount.

I hate buying vehicles. I am way better buying a car for someone else, I have done that effectively. Anyone have any other tips, I am all ears.

Buy new cars is very easy. Get dealer Invoice price from the Internet and start your negotiation from there. Let say Invoice price +$500. Get the best price from the dealer and leave - don't sign anything yet. Go to another dealer asking him if you can get even better price. Then go the third dealer, return to the first one and so on. Not exactly sure when to get invoice price for US cars, but I think there was threads about it if you run a search. And I got a feeling that dealers in US are way more willing to negotiate the price.

Read this thread and then let me know if you have any questions. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/113643-tda-fee-invoice.html

There's no need to pay full invoice (which includes profit btw). The only exception is if inventory is limited for the exact vehicle you want AND you don't want to wait for another to come along. You may run into this if you are stuck on a Trail with KDSS. Not so much with the Limited.

I love car shopping, but that's because I take the time to break down the numbers. It's much more rewarding when you walk away knowing you got a great deal. I just bought my T4R last week so everything is fresh on my mind.

MSRP on my 2011 4R Trail was $36,555.00
Options and the rest of the BS was a total of $39,319.00

Here's what I've done since buying cars/trucks;
Find out what it cost for Toyota to build the truck you're interested in.
Find out dealer kick backs, incentives and the like from Toyota.
Make sure you have rebate information.
Go to TrueCar.com and look to see what options/etc. REALLY cost.
All the above is available on the net free of charge.

Now take all that info on the last couple days of the month cause that's when stealerships what to move vehicles.
If you haven't done business with the stealership before, hop into the service department and ask "what salesman/woman would you recommend that will not waist my time and won't feed me a bunch of BS".
9 times out of 10 they will lead you to a good salesman/woman.
Once you find said person, let the fun begin. Don't look at buying a vehicle as a chore, look at it as an adventure.
Calmly say "this is what I want but am in no hurry to buy".
He/she will play the game until you drop all those figures on their lap.
Chances are they will say "we can't do that" then you say "thanks for your time, goodbye".
They have all your info and I bet they call you back the next day.
See where I'm going here?
There is never a need to pay full price for anything, except gas and grocery's. Did I mention I'm Scottish!

So I got my 2011 4R Trail with KDSS, running boards and extended warranty for $36K even. Yup, it had 560 miles on her (came up from TN) but that was part of the negotiating process also.
Zero % financing.....can't beat that!

Thanks for the inspiration. I am WAY better at buying cars for other people that I am for myself. Yes, I look at it as a chore. But I don't know if you ever tried to buy a car on Route 22 in New Jersey. It is gangsta style attack sales. It can get tough.

Yes, my service advisor did recommend me to a salesperson at the dealership. I will start with him and make add to this post, letting you know how I did.

It gets more complicated with used vehicles because they are priced so high. They have a 2011 SR5 on the lot used. I can buy a new one for less!

Hope this info helps:

I'm in the process of buying a 2012 SR5 4WD in Black/Graphite cloth with convenience package (moonroof, 110 outlets), running boards, cargo net, mud flaps, vehicle shield package (paint sealer and scotch guard carpet and seats). Adding cargo cover from parts department at 15% off/discount so $128 extra.

Out the door cost is $34,500. So about $1,500 under MSRP.

Oklahoma Tags & Taxes aren't done at the dealership but rather the tag office within 30 days. $91 for the tag and $1,009 taxes total $1,200

They tried to find one like this but couldn't so I had to bassically order it. They called Saturday and it will be at port on May 5 and should be here to pick up May 9 or 10.

I am in the same boat. I am a little stuck deciding between Trail or Limited. What I really want is a Trail with KDSS and Entune/Nav. Every dealer in town has said "You won't see one like that."

Yeah, the limited gives you all of the comfort stuff that's nice, but even though I don't do as much off-road as I once did, it'd be fun to know I have it. Plus the overall look I much prefer.

I want to find a dealer/sales person I can work with and maybe order exactly what I want...not sure if that's easy or not.

The price games are just a matter of numbers and a dealer who will do it all over email so the deal is crystal-clear in writing by the time we're done.

I don't want to steal it, just want a strong deal and call it a day. I despise the process however...I negotiate 50% of my time every day and I want buying the car to just be short and sweet...but right.

Have fun...

Yeah, forget MSRP minus and think Invoice +

Exactly. Use TrueCar and Edmunds as a guide. You'll be able to get closer to, or even below, invoice on a Limited or SR5. Trails are harder to come by, so you're looking at invoice plus on those. And possibly having to order and wait. At least right now, but that will change later this year when there are more Trails in stock.

Gosh-

I was looking at Trail's in the Denver area. Thought there were more out there. I am backing off on the Trail/Limited and may go with a SR5 (in 10 years never been stuck...) with a premium package to get the leather heated seats, enture, nav, etc. I have three salespeople calling me. But making me be polite. I am pre-negotiating before I get there. Will keep all posted..

I'll let you know my story real quick.

I had wanted to buy a TE w/ Xplore equippment (an expensive proposition for sure) and when it came time to deal with a dealership in Michigan - they wouldn't budge off of their MSRP (Minus $500 for Military Discount) or $42,300. I'm not tied to any one geographic region but I was adamant that I wanted a Black TE w/ KDSS and NAV. So pretty rare and hard to find.

I ended up contacting dealerships in Colorado (where my dad bough his Limited last summer), New York (where I bought my 2008 V8 Sport in 2008) and a few elsewhere...and no one wanted to deal with me or could find what I wanted.

...along came Ebay. I knew from True car that the price point for Invoice should be around $37,2 with options. I found what I wanted from a dealership in PA listed on ebay with a buy it now price for $37,5. I called them that morning, asked a few questions, agreed to a $600 warranty upgrade to 6yr/72k miles and they had their loan paperwork that night. Easiest car buying experience EVER.

Details to follow. But I think I inked a deal on a SR5 with a premium package and some goodies. MSRP 39,346. Price agreed to $35,752. Lower than True Value. No haggling. That was the price on the internet. Two other dealers said they would not even discount off MSRP... More when I have time.
