Yea. It doesn't work that way. You either build a car around being electronically controlled or you don't. Non-ECU controlled vehicles must be designed much simpler. They get worse gas mileage. Are much more sensitive to they type of fuel they run (pinging), etc. etc.
Your car is built around an ecu, which means that everything for the MAF to the Fuel pump, to the timing is controlled by a delicate relationship between sensors,
electronics and the ECU. Unplugging the ECU makes your car inoperable.
If you are really THAT concerned that your ECU goes, I recommend you simply carry a spare. That said... they are pretty dang reliable. They are made about as tough as you can make one.
