Can a 1987 4Runner run without a computer?

I am looking to bypass the computer on my '87...I have plans.. What do I need to do to bypass it? What all does the computer run?

Why would you want to bypass the ECU? That is what tells the motor how to act right and it also scans for diagnostics.

In short, NO! You cannot bypass the ecu. It's there for a reason, if it's broke then replace it.

I was just wondering in an emergency situation.. I don't plan on getting rid of the ecu, but was just wondering if it would start without it hooked up..

It will not start without the ECU. The ecu is like the brain of the motor, without it... it's dead.

Yea. It doesn't work that way. You either build a car around being electronically controlled or you don't. Non-ECU controlled vehicles must be designed much simpler. They get worse gas mileage. Are much more sensitive to they type of fuel they run (pinging), etc. etc.

Your car is built around an ecu, which means that everything for the MAF to the Fuel pump, to the timing is controlled by a delicate relationship between sensors,
electronics and the ECU. Unplugging the ECU makes your car inoperable.


If you are really THAT concerned that your ECU goes, I recommend you simply carry a spare. That said... they are pretty dang reliable. They are made about as tough as you can make one.
