Can you run aftermarket auxiliary lights from factory fog light switch???

i am looking to get an aftermarket bumper (ARB) that doesn't accommodate the factory fog lights..

Can i re-wire the factory fog light harness to some aftermarket lights or light bar???

has anyone done this before? is there a max wattage i should be concerned about (i.e. 55w etc)...

I used the wiring for my stock, lower valance, fog lights to power a pair of Hella 500, 55w lights. It has been years with zero issues. The stock lights are 55 watt too so Expected no issues.

If you wanted to power more powerful lights, you could have the stock wiring trigger a solenoid.

By the way, 55 watts times two lights for a total of 110 watts of power.

do you have a write up on what the wiring looked like? is there an adapter so i can easily plug the lights in without splicing the wires?
110w's im assuming is what your running? what types of hella's did you buy? model number?? yours looks good. any advice on using a light bar instead?

If you're not adding additional lights and you're just replacing the existing fogs with something mountable to your ARB, then just cut the wires before the pig tail (save it, in case you want to re-install) and connect your new fogs to the wires. Done.

I was just contemplating this exact project yesterday. I didn't realize the stock fogs were 55w. That simplifies my wiring up a ton. I'm going to make some simple little disconnect plugs and use all the factory wiring.

walnut creek is about 30-45 minute drive depending on where I'm coming from.

FIRST. i need to buy that ARB bumper... $866 later. unless someone knows how to get a deal????


then I'm definitely on your door step after that. not much experience with how electrical connections work. but I'm going to google up a storm now.

dude i really want to use an adapter with the factory harness as to not mess anything up if it needs to change back. can i pay you for a harness if you fab one up???

I've done a similar mod to my '02 4Runner on a TJM bumper that was modified to allow fog lights.

First, I did the "Fog Light Mod". This provides you control of the fog lights independently of the headlights as long as your parking lights are ON while still utilizing the OEM fog light control on the stalk of the steering wheel column. Second, I just snipped the OEM wires (where they plug into the stock OEM fogs) and spliced in my own aftermarket fogs.

Both steps required very little effort. I do not have any step-by-step photos of the install, but you can click the link in my sig to find photos of the finished install.

Make sure you pull wires from the bumper fog lamps to your new lights. The OEm bumper lamps are 55 W and if your aux lights in the same wattage, you should be fine.

I did this for my $8 dollar tractor lights from Harbor Freight that I put in my Outdoorlogic bumper fog light holes. Works just fine.

I used the fog light circuit/switch to power my driving lights, but added a relay and heavier wiring. It also keeps the fog lights on when the brights are on (or the headlights are off). You can do just that part (grounding the green/black wire) if you just want to be able to have the fog lights on at any time.

Nice mod. Any idea how to do that on a 2000. There seems to be a difference in the wiring between the years.
