cant get oil pickup tube gasket off housing

I just finished the head gasket on my 4runner (again) and one of my last tasks is to put the oil pump pickup tube and pan back on. I took them off to clean out all the sludge, and boy there was a lot.

So I have three questions:

1) Can I put a bead of FIPG on the oil pickup tube gasket where it meets the oil pump housing ( or whatever that thing is called )? Or is there some trick to get it off? even removing the little stud I couldnt get the remaining gasket off with a razer blade.



2) I also can't think of a good way to get the old FIPG or RTV or whatever it is off the oil pan itself. On the pan, it is not a flat surface



3) What do you recommend for getting the old FIPG off the bottom of the engine?


4) What's the silver round thing next to my oil filter? neither of my other 4runners, both 5vz manuals, have it. This one which is a auto 2runner is the only one with it.

Try these Harbor Freight Nylon wire brushes on a drill for the FIPG. Access to this page has been denied

The silver round thing is your oil cooler.

Between my thumb nail, the gasket cleaner, and that awesome brush it all came off.

Glad it worked out for you. I used the hell out of them cleaning up the junk yard engine for paint when I did my engine swap.

Just as everything was going well, one of the bolts broke off in the block while torquing to 66 inch pounds. All the other bolts torqued down fine. Torque spec so light, no idea, maybe the bolt was twisted and compromised already. I have no idea how to get it out, or if missing just that one is going to cause a problem... any thoughts?

If you pull the pan and use a Dremel to cut a slit in the bolt remains, it'll come out easy with a flat-head screwdriver. You may even be able to get it out as-is with a reverse drill bit, so that's another idea. Standard drill bits might sink it deeper and you don't want that.
