car alarm questions

So i have a 2001 4Runner SR5 and had hoped that it had keyless entry on it. Naturally after ordering Key fobs i realized it was one of the trucks that got a dealer installed aftermarket alarm.

The guy at my yota Stealership told me it might be more cost effective to just simply get another alarm system rather than get keyfobs for the one i have citing that they could be anywhere from 100-150 bucks and new systems can be as low as 200 installed. I do not know if the existing system works or not but the truck did not come with any keyfobs.

So tell me about your experiences here, i have no idea what the good brands are or if its worth it to pay someone to install it for me. I do all my own work and have installed countless Stero systems and MSD ignition systems so im not afraid of electrical work but have never installed an alarm before.

Was there a particular brand that most dealers used? would it be worth tryin to find keyfobs for the one i have? i didnt know if these are things that hardley ever go bad or really what i should do at this point lol.

thanks for any help

EBay or Craigslist, found my fobs for 50$ on CL, just be patient, you'll find what you need. I talked to the car stereo shop to see if they could integrate remote start on mine, the said it would be almost $400, but that was integrating both systems on one fob

well i was going to go that route but i dont know what brand it is or if i can even get replacement fobs for it.

The guy at the stealership said the toyota brand fobs wouldnt work with it since its an aftermarket system and not a toyota alarm.

Installing alarms is no small feat. I threw in the towel about halfway through my install and called in an installer. You can find people on Craigslist to do it for about $50, well worth it imo.
