The hood scoop is a very subjective topic. Personally, I did not like the hood scoop. I could not afford the Limited, so I went with the SR5. I know it is trivial but when I read this topic I had to join in. I have been reading the posts for quite some time, now. That was the only reason I didn't buy the Sport. I just couldn't get over that "out of place hood scoop:. This is just my opinion, though. I don't want to start a fight like that Rupert guy. I just thought it was funny because I settled for a lesser 4runner all because of the stupid hood scoop.

To me....no 4runner is "lesser" than the other. It's just a matter of preferences as one owner prefers certain options over others. Some people I know can't stand leather seats, so that's good for them because they're saving $1500. Welcome to the forum! You are absolutley right Trance. There are no lesser 4runners. Poor choice of words on my end. I absolutely love the t&h bull bar. But I am sure there are those out there that prefer another type of bull bar. I finally ordered one, I am so anxious to get it.

Welcome to the board. If you look at it, the SR5 4Runner has a lengthy list of standard features. Compare it to some of the competitors and you have a top of the line vehcile. Personally, I don't think there is such thing as a "scaled down 4Runner." Don't worry, you are definitely not going to cause a fight because you are actually giving your opinion. Giving opinions on this board is a good thing!

That's one good thing about most Toyotas (and especially Hondas)...even the base model has a lot of features! This may also explain 4runner's high asking price, along with stellar resale value.

Just got the C&D mag. in the mail, read the story. Weird. The words don't match the number ratings on any of the vehicles. They also seem really over the top in their dislike of the hood scoop and the fuel door release, seems very strange. I'm 5'10" average size and have never noticed any problem seeing past the hood scoop or any problem with the seating position or the height of the roof. Oh well this will keep some people that just go by what they read in the mag's from considering the 4runner. I hope they enjoy their GC Jeeps. I had a GC Jeep once, lowest quality most trouble prone vehicle I've ever owned. Sold it after 1 year, wouldn't want to own one that was not covered under a bumper to bumper warranty and you need a spare vehicle to drive when the heep is in the shop. JMHO, but what do I know I don't write for a big time car Mag.

I bought the V8 4wd Sport edition, since I wanted the Xrias system on the shocks. I looked at all the SUV's they tested, and a lot of others. My main criterea was, did it have the ability to climb my steep driveway in up to 7" of snow (more than that, I have it plowed). The 4Runner and the LC were the only ones which measured up. The Land Rovers did, as did the Touareg, but there is no local service and there are reliability issues. I now have 20,000 mi on it and it has been flawless.

The funny thing is that you could have bought a Sport Edition and swapped hoods with someone else on this forum (and probably asked for a few bucks too) who would love the scoop on the hood.

Most people really like the aggressive look of the hoodscoop.

On the bottom end, actually, I would say that Toyota offers even more than Honda. Base base Echo's (let alone Corollas) have traditionally come with more stuff in them than Civic's.

But I know what you guys are saying; a "base" 4Runner or Highlander comes with some items that are not available even as OPTIONS from some toher companies.....gotta love it

Have you ever accidentally popped your hood at a gas station? I have--once. I felt like a moron because I was getting gas in New Jersey (they only have full service--not self-serve like New York) and the guy was looking at me like I was retarded.

Who else has popped thier hoods when trying to open the gas door? Come on, 'fess up.

I have never opened the hood accidentally at the gas station, but I have done the opposite. I am so used to opening the gas tank, I always mix them up when going to put something as simple as washer fluid in. It stinks when people who know you are watching and the gas tank flips open. I always talk about how I know so much about cars and I can't even open the hood! :lmao:

BTW, I forgot to say that I acted like I popped the hood on purpose... I walk to the front of my Runner and proceeded to check my oil!

Come on guys. You know that the fuel door release is designed to remind you to check the oil. Don't you guys ever figure things for yourself. Those C/D guys are grumpy because they don't have to check the oil, it's not their vehicle. So know we know something else about our 4Runners, thanks to C/D. If you're going up a steep hill and you can't see, either your driving a Sport model or you popped the hood on your last stop.

Don't feel bad guys. I have actually seen a few Toyota mechanics do this when going to service some 4Runners. They go to open the hood and the gas tank magically opens up. When I see that, I just fall on the floor laughing. I just hope they put the new oil in the correct place!!

I try to get out before I pop the gas tank that way I can see the black handle opposed to the gray one, so I haven't popped the wrong one yet. I HAVE pulled up to the wrong side of the pumps just not thinking, and proceeded to pop the gas tank cover. That's really embarrassing :bash:.

Lets see with the Heep we would be dealing with warranty issues and major componet repair and with the 4runner we worry about opening the gas filler lid versus the hood? Plus my nephew has a Hemi in his Dodge truck and you can't break the rear wheels loose from a stop by just stomping on the gas (no it doesn't have traction control)

I guess some vehicles are better made for magazine testing and others are built for customers. The fit and finish of Jeeps, Dodges, Chrysler and other Mercedes products is not what I'd pay for. And you'd think that sales figures would better reflect this kind of stuff. Wrong, there are so many vehicles sold into fleet and rental use at deep discounts that there count in the market place is inflated. That's how Ford Taurus sells so many vehicles while competing with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The Jeep has that same relationship with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner.
