car stereo troubles

okay im at a total loss... i removed the factory stereo and installed an aftermarket stereo system and for the life of me i can not figure out why my rear speakers wont play anything ive wired the speakers accordingly but still nothing any thoughts?

First I would make sure a signal is coming out of the unit. It could be bypassed in the settings thinking you are only using an amp or something. This could be easily checked by hooking a loose speaker up directly to the wires coming out the back of the unit. Just use an old tweeter or something. If you get no signal it's a settings issue or broke unit.

Assuming you get a signal then you are going to have to trace the wires back and see what went wrong. It could be something simple like you screwed through the shielding and grounded them out, or the wires aren't reaching where you think they are. But the first thing I would do is test the source and see if you even have signal coming from the unit. That's also the easiest thing to rule out.

Double and triple check your wiring. After you're confident that you have the wiring done right, wire the front speakers to the rear output to eliminate the chance of the rear speakers being the problem. Once that is done and you're 100% positive that the wiring is correct then I would assume that the internal amp in the h/u may be bad.

yeah i will give this a go. i know the rear speakers are wired correctly because they worked when the factory stereo was in place

Then double and triple check that the stereo wiring harness is wired properly... all the +'s and -'s in the right place, ect. If you used crimp connectors make sure you have good connections. Personally, I solder all my wiring and use heat shrink but it's personal preference.

it always helps to give year for your 4runner.. Some second gens have a built in amp for the rear speakers and if you are sending signal down factory wiring I bet the amp is not turning on. even if you do what SV said you will still end up with no sound.

I am willing to bet on your wire harness there is an extra blue wire that is not hooked up for the remote turn on for the factory amp.. I do believe there is a thread that covers this..

I didn't really think about the factory amp. Anytime I do a stereo install I never use the factory speakers and amp.

Me either but with little to no info from the OP its hard to gauge what he was doing.. I was not sure if he just ment the head unit or a complete system!!

does your vehicle have the built in boxes? I am making some really great sound with MB Quart and Focal rigth now...these boxes really help with the quality of the sound. I suggest youd pick some up if you dont have them. Check you local junkyard

im just using the factory amp and speakers with an older kenwood deck eventally i would like to upgrade the speakers and maybe even add a sub but that has to wait untill i get a locker and rock sliders

Gotcha... Then I would definitely look into the remote turn on wire that foonanas was talking about.

I have a 87' and it has a factory amp for each of the rear speakers as well. I think all 4runners had them from the factory. On the first generation 4runners the amp turn on (remote) wire is white. On an aftermarket stereo the remote wire is blue. Not to be cofused with Blue-White, if you use that wire your rear speakers will only work when the radio is on, but will not work when you use a CD or other input as it is used to trigger the power antenna.

Alright, silly question, but on your deck, as you go through your settings, does it say that your fade is all the way to the front or midway? Also, if he's not running an amp set up, there should be no reason he should even be tapped into the remote wire other than to turn the unit on and off with the ignition. Just my .02

not aware of any 1st gens with a factory amp.. Pretty sure they started in the 2nd gens.

taboob: even if he goes after market deck and he has a factory amp he will need that wire hooked up just like an after market amp. He has to be able to turn it on some how.
