while i was detailing my 05 runner on one side, my 4 yr old helped out on the other - by polishing it with pieces of rocks he found in the yard - man, i was mad!!!

That happened to me about 8 years ago - my then 2 year old did the exact same thing on what was then a 3 month old car. What possessed him I will never know - I really think he thought he was helping out!! Best of luck staying calm - based on personal experience, I would take it off for a respray of the offending section now - if you try to polish it out you will forever see the scars and be reminded of the fateful day...

Respray sounds like an expensive procedure for a few scatches, is it?

Yes - it is expensive - and you might be able to get a pro to buff them out instead - worth looking into - just dont do what I did and try to polish them out yourself then try to live with the results - I cursed every time I walked past the spot for a long time.

This is a great opportunity for you to model to your son how a man deals with problems.

The way you deal with him is the way he will deal with his problems in the future.

Maybe even the way he deals with you.

Hehe...now the last one sounds like something I would have done as a kid...

But, alas, no, I never did those...I did, however, be helpful enough to lock the doors for my parents while they were unloading the groceries or something and the keys were still in the car...

Kids just want to be helpful and immitate the people they love. I know I tried to immitate my father on many occasion...think of it as the ultimate flattery from your son... I do agree with KMX's assessment of the way we react being the way our children react. Maybe now is a good time to show him what happens when you use the wrong tools for the job and teach him to help detail it...then you'll have a real TRAINED helper next time...

The son who once polished my previous car with stones now washes my wife's car every weekend - but a tip - give them a sheepskin mit rather than a sponge - sponges get dropped in the dirt/grit too easily and exuberance means they tend to try using the dirty sponge still. Mits tend to stay on their hands (now there's a product idea - child size car cleaning mits for our little helpers!)

My kids always want to help. They started to wash the truck with the brushes I use to clean the wheels but I caught them in time (they were only on the cladding by then, gotta love the unpainted cladding). Now I just have them rinse with the hose, they have more fun doing that anyway.

my lil niece poured nail polish remover on my 3000GT hood when she was 3. aided by the sun, it ate right thru the paint & left many craters. still have the car w/the paint damage.
