CAT question and Poll

So I want to take my CAT off my truck to have a little more exhaust sound but I dont have access to a welder or piping right now but I was wondering if I hollow out my CAT will it make it louder? will it hurt anything? does it sound bad? I have been reading all over the internet about it and its about 5050 with its bad and sounds like crap and go ahead and do it it sounds sweet and not bad for engine. just curious if anyone has done it or thinks its worth it.

might as well try it out, ive never done it, but im sure its one of the cheapest ways to increase exhaust noise. If you screw up, oh well, you tried!

the only reason i could see it being a BAD thing is for the enviro....

I bought my truck and the previous owner had already removed the cat. I have always been able to pass inspection because its older than 25 years, but the last time I went, the guy actually checked for a cat and failed me.

As for sound, I don't know. My little 22r is about as strong as you can get and still be reliable, and it doesn't sound like a lowered Honda racer.

As for the environment, I am sure its not great or even good for the air. However, all the emissions stuff is removed from the engine, and even with 35's and 4.88's, I managed to get 20 mpg from Minniapolis to Austin, TX. Did the removal of emissions restrictions help the better MPG? I don't know, but I do know that I get pretty good MPG and power as it is right now.

For the record, your cat might be toast and so removing it might help, but if you put on a fresh cat, you might also notice gains.

It hurts the environment and your pocket book if caught but not the vehicle

when I say will it hurt anything I mean the engine. I know its bad for the environment but here in MN we dont have emission tests to worry about so I dont need to worry about failing that. As for the sound bad. I am curious if its a deeper meaner sound or if it sounds like a gian fart all the time. thanks for the replies

Removing it or hollowing it out will barely change the sound with the stock muffler.

I've always wondered if the second O2 sensor would be affected, and whether or not the engine would run rich or the opposite because of that. A cat exhaust piece is $600, and I'm not sure I'd rather be helping the environment or my pocket book. I mean, I'm already helping the environment by driving something old instead of having a new vehicle manufactured.

Im not sure if it will sound better but and your vehicle will actually run better.. It wont hurt the engine at all.. Its just the emission issue sometimes if you do that you may shoot out more crap that can cause you to fail the emmisions test.. I had a spare exhaust on my car.. I had the stock exhaust and also a catless performance 3" exhaust straight pipe that i just bolted and un bolted when emmisions came around..

It wont hurt the engine.. But if you dont need emmisions just eliminate it and put some bigger piping on it.. either way you go it WONT sound horrible but just by eliminating the cat your truck will run better but if you want some noise put a cherry bomb on there (old school) or get bigger piping

How can you tell if your cat is clogged? I'm thinking of removing mine, but only if it's clogged up. If it's doing it's job I see no reason to take it off. I have the 3.0 with 177,000 on the clock.

as for everyone talking about emissions. MN doesnt have that so i dont have to worry about it and i have never seen a cop having someone pulled over and stooping under the car or truck to see if there is a CAT.

as for the environmentalists. If you are driving a 4runner and on this website you obviously dont care about the earth as these trucks are not at all evironmently friendly lol.

Agree with everything except the environmentalist part. My truck is 10 years old and might get that many more. I bought someone else's hand-me-down, and am not responsible for a new machine being built. The worst people for the environment are probably those who have owned an SUV, a Prius, a Smart Car, and maybe three other vehicles in the past ten years in a never-ending quest to relieve boredom or be trendy.

I would be more concerned with hurting my engine than hurting the environment. You have have huge factories spewing sh!t out - a little Yota engine isn't going to make a differene, like pissing in the ocean.

That being said I wouldn't bother hollowing out/removing the CAT, buy a Ford or Chevy if you want to experiment.
