Here's a question for all you guys with the antenna mounted by the drivers rear taillight. What exactly about the Firestik mount makes the rear door unable to open? I think I am going to fab up my own mount to circumvent this issue but I need to know what the actual issue is! Thanks :lasercannon:

rear hatch hits it when opening. I built my own similar to the fire stick one but its further from the hatch and just barely hits. also have enough room to install a flag on the same mount ( did that today)

My CB is mounted next to the shifter. I will soon be relocating it into the ash tray location. jsmarine has his mounted there, although I remember him talking about some interference with the factory radio output amplifier... not an issue for me, but it may be for you.

My antenna is mounted on the passenger corner of the front bumper. I will be relocating the antenna to the driver side rear when I install my 102" whip.

I want to see how you're going to mount the 102" whip as that is exactly what I have that I use with my Cobra 148GTL CB.

my mount is set out far enough that the antenna does not come in contact with the hatch or block the tail light, with room to spare.

If you're interested in one like this one, contact driffter33. He makes them. He made the original prototype on my 4Runner. I run a heavy duty Firestik spring and a 4" Firestik II

I've never hit it with my leg (and I'm 6') and don't notice it's even there. Mine has a bottom mounted speaker so I couldn't really put it in the dash or on the side of the hump where Elton mounted his and still be able to hear it well. This was really my only choice, but it worked out just fine.

How do you have it mounted up there? I bought some "Industrial Strength" velcro and it held for half the day!

Cobra WX ST II

I didn't have to use any kind of special adapters or brackets for it to work. I managed to secure it with the stock plate.

Moved the Uniden to the ashtray and got a stereo pocket. Used the light from the ash tray to light said stereo pocket.

I dremeled the plastic behind my ash tray out and installed my Midland CB with NOAA weather radio flush mounted. Its wired into my fuse box too. Cubby hole acts as a nice place to store the mic too. Very pleased with the install.

What model Uniden is that? I like how flush it mounts, does that head unit come ready to mount a PA?

Thanks. Its a Uniden Pro 520 XL. Yes it has a audio jack in the back for PA and another for an external speaker. I just have a PA hooked up, no speaker because the built in one works fine.

It is only that far in because of the Coax L-Fitting I bought. They cost like $3 though.

I have been reading up on the Uniden PRO520XL, and the Cobra 19. I think I am sold on the Uniden since it is 0.25" shorter and should fit a bit more flush if I get the 90* coax adapter.

According to some things I have read, there are certain antennaes that work better with specific radios. What antennae do you guys recommend for the 520XL? I do not want to drill holes, and would prefer it to be the 36" whip since primarily I will use it for communication with buddies while wheeling and of course the PA.

Also, where did you wire the power? I read the PRO520 manual and it says it is important to know whether the power source is positively or negatively grounded. In line fuse? Direct to battery?

I've got a 510XL (same diff) and I use a 48" SS whip. Didn't research it, I just had it kicking around, so on it went. I'm no expert on antennas but in my experience as long as you set your SWR properly, it should be fine. I wired the power in parallel with one of the lighter plugs in the dash and put an inline fuse on it. Simple and easy. The truck is negatively grounded. You typically only see positive grounding on older British cars.

Can you walk me through the wiring of your CB? I understand there is a positive, negative and then the microphone. Microphone is simple. My question is about the positive and negative...likely not to be run straight to the battery. Did you install a fuse/relay? You use an 'ad-a-fuse' on the fuse box...tie it into the ignition somehow??

Any help would be appreciated! Wiring is NOT my cup of tea....

I had a shop do it, but what they did was tap the ignition fuse under the driver kick panel. The wire to the CB had an inline fuse already built-in. Then just ground it somewhere behind the dash.

So what wire goes to the fuse? Isnt there a positive and a negative wire for the CB? Or is it a power wire, and a ground?

Like I said I am not good with wiring...I have never 'tapped' a fuse before, what does that entail? Maybe you can send a photo??

Red is power, black is ground. Once you get the radio and look at it, it should make sense. For the record, I hate wiring too. haha

Thank you Ripcord. I am still a bit unsure on how to tap it into the ignition fuse. Can anybody offer a description and a photo on how to do this? Also, what ground did everybody use?
