i got a cobra from my trucking days and have thought about sticking it in my 4runner. Drifter33 has a pretty nice bracket in one of those threads for mounting the firestik. not sure if he still makes them or not though. I wouldnt mind having one myself.

Here's where I have been getting info:

Not sure how you are going about this or your budget but I discovered in my search, not yet complete, it is a false economy to buy a CB on line. I would highly recommend a local CB shop, if you can find one, advise you on the purchase and if not install tune your rig.
I discovered some CB's need to be tweaked to get the max out of them. I was highly interested in the Uniden Bearcat 980 but discovered the weather channels need to be tweaked to even get to work. Not hard to do but I have no background for such things.
It's also highly dependent on the antenna and tuning of it, so with a good antenna you can get more from a lesser radio.
If you are insistent on the ashtray mount your choices will be limited. I considered one in the seat console thingy.
What ever you decide I'd like to see your final solution.

I agree completely. If I hadn't already had an aux speaker laying around I would totally go for a front during CB. The top mount speaker is a joke to hear out of. But I do love that mine fits in the ashtray instead if the extra DIN spot. Personal preference is what it comes down too.
I mounted a small cobra cb in my toyota pickup in the ash tray area and the only thing I hate about it is that it doesn't have channel memory. Whenever the truck is turned off the channel goes to 1 when it is started back up.
Not sure if there is an alternative that doesn't do this, but for you guys that are mounting one in the ash tray, it would be worth looking in to. It doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but when you're wheelin' with a group of people and you keep forgetting to turn it back to the right channel every time you stop, it kinda sucks!

Hardwire it to the battery.
Then you run the risk of leaving it on and draining your battery. I chose to make it switched rather than this so that I don't have to worry about it.
Everything comes with risk. You just have to ask if the reward is worth it.
