CEL, VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF - 2003

I have a 2003 4Runner Limited. V8 4.7 L.
MILEAGE: 159,000

Last week my CEL, VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights all came on. I went to AutoZone to get the codes.

P0153
P2197

I'm assuming this is an 02 sensor, but could be wrong. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? Or how much it would cost (approx) at a dealership or independent mechanic?

I am mechanically inclined, but by no means am I an auto mechanic.

It could be a loose gas cap. If it is/was, the lights will go off after a few days.

Got the same thing a few weeks back, it sounds like gas cap loose or was loose for a start. Got it to service and they check the gas cap for pressure and the whole fuel system and everything was alright. Clear the codes and thats it!

Not a gas cap for sure. P0440 441 442 456 are some Eva codes. May be looking at a o2 sensor.

I tried the gas cap, but it was already tight. I am guessing it's an O2 sensor. Can I look these codes up anywhere?

How much is an O2 sensor (parts & labor)? Thanks.

So I searched the codes.

P0153: O2 circuit slow response (Bank 2, Sensor 1)
P2197: I found conflicting information on this, but it seems that this is something to do with A/F sensor stuck on lean. (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

So I am assuming this all the same sesor, if the P2197 diagnostic is accurate.

By the way, the 4Runner is running fine. Without the lights, I wouldn't notice an issue with the engine. However, I did drive through some mud yesterday and the TRAC control is clearly off. Not sure if this is done on purpose with the fault codes above since they only have to do with fuel/air sensors.

If I can get clarification on P2197, I'll try fixing myself.

I'm looking at the service manual.

P0153 is bank 2 sensor 1
P2197 is also bank 2 sensor 1. The code description is Oxygen sensor signal stuck lean. It list the following trouble areas: Open or short in heated o2 sensor circuit, Heated O2 sensor, Heated o2 sensor heater, EFI relay, Air induction system, Fuel pressure, Injector, or ECM.

According to the manual P2197 is triggered when the output voltage of the o2 sensor remains at 0.4V or more during idling after the engine is warmed up.

P0153 is response time for O2 sensor's output voltage to change from rich to lean or from lean to rich is 0.9 seconds or more during idling after engine is warmed up.

Combined the testing for both codes is 13 pages in the manual. Both do have replacing the O2 sensor as a resolution.

The other repairs listed are replace EFI harness, repair/replace air induction system, repair/replace fuel system, replace fuel injector assembly.

Looks to me like its the O2 sensor.
