charging issue

Ok looking at a 86 4runner really good shape body wise has an 1984 22r motor only problem is it won't charge it burns up alternators. guy said it was because the 86 alternator had a built in regulator and the 84 didn't it only has 50.000miles on said motor and the truck is lifted with 33 inch tires any clue guy wants 1000 for it sorry for any confusion

$1000 is too much for any non-running truck, especially one with a poorly done motor replacement.

He said all i need is an external voltage regulator and a new alt for a 84 not 86

OK, the earlier trucks (like my 83 and 84) have an external mechanical regulator mounted on the fender, while later trucks (w/22RE) have an alt w/internal IC reg,

SO the original 86 alt had the internal Vreg and the replacemenet 84 engine has an alt with an external Vreg and burns up. I think if that wiring was modified to work with an external Vreg module, you'd be OK.

You need to match the proper type of alt for the year engine in the truck, or to match the wiring that's already there.

Ok so i figured out what's wrong with it or what he did wrong he was putting the right alt on but didn't know he had to have the regulator so it wasn't charging right he tried to use an 86 alt but it won't bolt up
