I calculated gas mileage for the first tank last night... 16 hopefully it will go up with the new plugs and the fuel injector cleaner out of the system. I added up most of the parts and things we have bought for it and the total it a little over $5600 including the cost of the truck.

What size tires are those BFG's ?

They are 235/85/R16. They were the skinniest 32's I could find. I think they are equivalent to a 32x9.5 R16

Edit: I compared the tire width to the 31x9.50 R15's on our trailer and I think mine are closer to a 32x8.5 R16

Towing/ Airbox Mods

First time towing today and my first time pulling a trailer. Did good even with a bunch of gravel in the back



I made some mods to the intake...

Drilled some holes





Did away with the elbow and tube in the fender





I know this changes it to a warm air intake, but there is much better airflow now. There is a very slight noise increase, but I can't hear it from inside. All I need to do the ISR mod is a pipe and a few hose barbs.

Why do you H8 the Walker exhaust? Isn't it similar to stock? How is your catalytic converter? Have you replaced the O2 sensors? The cheapest are Denso on Amazon. (Thinking about your MPG's)

Yes, it it close to stock- that's why I hate it. The 1st manual 4Runner I ever drove had a Flowmaster 40 and I loved it. I drilled the holes in the stock one and loved it. Now I have quiet again and I don't like it...

How is your catalytic converter?

Nope, the upstream one is an aftermarket one and the rear one is probably original. Would new ones make a big difference?

They should help but if you're not getting a code I don't really know. I see you already did plugs and wires. I get 20-22 mpgs.

I did not do wires. Should I? They were in good shape except one was a little corroded, but we cleaned it.

Hopefully the new exhaust will help MPGs with the muffler not being clogged up with a broken baffle.

I also read up on cleaning the MAF sensor so I will probably go get some cleaner.

We also have sea foam leftover from doing the Celica, so I'll give that a try.

Just kidding! I just read more on sea foam and it says it can mess up spark plugs, so I'm not doing that since they are new.

Dad likes the muffler :boxer: The muffler fit up nicely after we bent the hangers back to where they should have been.

The gas mileage thing won't be known for a while. It's never been over 55 mph. Mostly city driving between 25 and 50 for now. The new muffler and stereo are a good mix. The old one whistled over 3000 rpm and had to be holding back some flow.

The only major thing left for now are the drivers seat and the upper link bushings at the rear. I think they are shot.

I would also do fuel filter as well. It's an easy job and a quick Google search should find you the write up on this site. (I would do it for you but I'm in class and should probably pay attention). I had the same issue as you with poor mpg, even worse.

Here was my plan of attack. I had a few other issues to deal with too but I'm getting between 18-21 mpg city/highway driving normally.

Plugs AND wires (mine were completely shot)
Air filter, I use k&n
Clean MAF
Clean all intake parts before throttle body ( there was a stick in mine. How it got there I have no idea.
Clean throttle body, another good writeup on here somewhere
Fuel filter
Fuel injector cleaner (like seafoam or something)
I eventually got a fuel injector cleaning service done when I took it to my mechanic last for about 129 I believe
Change oil of you haven't already. Never know what the PO was running or how long it's been.
If you end up replacing the O2 sensor and A/F sensor be sure to use denso. These computers are super sensitive and don't like anything else.

In my case I was able to significantly improve mpg and my engine sounds much better. Those are all the parts (I thibk) that have to do with your fuel economy so work your way through that list. In all honesty 16 city isn't terrible. As you replace these parts you'll be surprised how nasty they can be (fuel filter) and should probably be done anyways. Plus who doesn't like working on these things, even routine maintenance pumps me up haha. Best of luck.

The truck has a new paper filter (unknown brand) from the PO, cleaned intake, throttle body, and recently ran injector cleaner through it. Also, the new exhaust might help since it's not clogged up, so next tank, I will calculate the mpg. I also drive really slow- I don't speed, I shift at 2500 RPM, and don't push on the gas more than 25% of the pedal length.



I am pretty sure this remote will not work, but if anyone knows, it's FCC ID is HYQ12BAN. I tried the programming instructions on here, but it says it is for 99+ models. I also have the factory/ dealer installed alarm system with the box under the seat and the light/ microphone in the center console. The light has never lit and i think it has been disabled or something. The box is still plugged in. I read something about pushing the green button on the side of the green box, but I couldn't get it to do anything. Any ideas?

More Airbox Mods/ MAF Clean/ Alienware Emblem

I cleaned the MAF sensor today. While I had the airbox out, I did this.


I also installed my Alienware emblem on the grill.

Gas mileage for 1/4 of a tank was 17 . I just looked it up and it's rated at 15 city so I guess that's ok! lol

Blower Fan Clean/ 5th Gen

Sunday night, I cleaned out the blower fan for the front HVAC. It was nasty! It is a lot quieter now. Next thing to do is the rear heater fan. We might be tackling the fuel filter soon.

Junkyard Haul/ Two-Low Mod

Went to the junkyard today after seeing a 2000 online that arrived on Friday. I was amazed at how stripped it was in such short time. I got a pull handle for the driver's side, a center console with cupholders, e-brake handle, center bezel with 3 power outlets, a brand new looking air filter, one hub cap, and a center a/c vent louver, and an owner's manual.

The center console doesn't have a rear heater, so I will need to graft the cup holders onto my console.

The dual power outlets will need to be attached somehow.

I got the owner's manual, warranty stuff, and maintenance guide for free!

Made it out for 50 bucks.
