Classics Go To Moab III

So lets start talking trails. Here are some trails to consider, though there's way more than this (ratings are mine on a 3-10 scale, with a 3- being drivable by a new driver in a stock truck without needing frequent spotting, 4+ being about as much as a newish driver with a stock truck can handle without body damage becoming a real possibility, and a 8 or higher requiring a skilled driver with 33s and at least one locker). On trails I haven't personally driven (most of them!), I'm basing my rating on the descriptions from TrailDamage.com and the Charlie Wells guidebook, feel free to provide input if you have experience on any of these. Also, I know at least liveoffroad wanted to find some trails to push his truck, so anybody feel free to suggest more if I haven't included the kind of wheeling you want to see. I don't mind leading on a trail I haven't driven, but I'd much prefer to turn those duties over to somebody who HAS driven a particular trail if possible, so please volunteer if you're willing.

7 Mile Rim (5)
Kane Creek(6+)
Hells Revenge(5+)
Fins-n-things(4+)
Porcupine Rim (4)
Tower Arch/Eye of the Whale (3+)
Chicken Corners (3)
Gemini Bridges (3-)
Long Canyon/Schafer Switchbacks (3-)
Bull Canyon (3-)
Hey Joe Canyon (3+)
Elephant Hill (4+)
Triple Threat (Poison Spider, Golden Spike, Gold Bar Rim) (6+/7)
Strike Ravine (4+)
Flat Iron Mesa (4+)
Area BFE (3- to 10)
A couple of the local guys who are coming have suggested Pritchett. Pritchett is probably an 8+ and we'd almost certainly want to have somebody very familiar with the trail walk us through it. Anybody doing Pritchett should not be planning on driving their truck home, carnage gets increasingly more likely the less built your truck is. It can be completed with a single locker and 33s, but I for one will be VERY nervous on that trail.

Who is definitely coming, and how much truck do you have? That'll certainly flavor the koolaid in terms of what trails we start to plan on hitting - sound off and let me know if you're locked in or on the fence, and your preferred and max difficulty levels.

I'm guessing folks will be trickling in over the 23rd and 24th, so I propose the following loose schedule.
Thursday 24th: Tour Arches Nat'l Park - mostly short hikes, some light wheeling out towards Tower Arch to whet the appetite. Alternatively, we could drive the Long Canyon/Schafer Trail loop and visit Dead Horse Point. Highly scenic and mostly non-technical either way.
Friday 25th: Get to know eachother with a day on Sand Flats Road - Porcupine Rim, Fins and Things, Hells Revenge. This is classic Moab wheeling, with enough obstacles to keep the built trucks entertained but nothing too hard that we can't spot a stock truck through.
Saturday 26th: This is the day we split up, if we're going to. If you have a particular trail that you absolutely must visit, this is the day to do it. Post up if you're willing to lead a trail on this day and what trail you want to go on, and hopefully we can get a good mix of stock-friendly and stupid-hard stuff going here to make everyone happy.
Sunday 27th: Go South. Start the day on Flat Iron Mesa, then take Strike Ravine into Area BFE and spend the rest of the day screwing around there - it's a giant playground, with a couple of 7+ and harder trails and an open area where you can try any obstacle that suits your fancy.
Monday 28th: Anybody still in town? I expect most of us will be pulling out today, but if there's enough trucks still around we can do whatever seems fun. Maybe a trip south to Elephant Hill?

I'm just spitballing at this point, so please don't hesitate to make suggestions or throw in your own ideas.

Unfortunately with the new job I am more on the fence than for sure now. I have no clue what my shift schedule will be then or if I'll even have the weekend off since I'll still be in training.

That being said, if I do go hopefully my truck will be a little more built. I would feel comfortable with taking on 6ish (Kevin rating system) trails depending on my spotter. Haha after all I do need to drive my truck home and commute to work in it too.

Man would LOVE to come but I don't think the one year old and the 4 year old would do well in a 15 hour road trip...

Is there a campground or affordable motel u recommend? Where do u usually stay?

I stayed here the beggining of November-

Big Horn Lodge|Hotel|Motel|Accomodations|Moab Utah Lodging|Moab Motel|Moab Hotel|AAA|Reservations|Moab Reservations

Nice place and the diner attached to it has great food.

I didn't have either of my Toyota's but still had a lot of fun!

Excellent. How soon should we make reservations? Now?

Reading their website we can't make reservations until January. Till then they are closed for the season.

I see they have group sites. Might be cool to be located all bunched together - ringed by our trusty steeds (4Runners).

There's a minimum number of heads required to get the group site, too. I'm hoping to see more folks chime up and confirm they're coming before I call to make reservations.

What about a good ol TN boy?....lets see...30hrs one way. Might as well say 2 days to get there, 2 full days of wheeling, and 2 days home. Lets call it a week.

All joking aside me and my brother (jeeper) were, a few weeks ago, talking about making a road trip out to Moab to wheel sometime next year. Gettin tired of this ol southern mud.

Our plan is to borrow a friends trailer to put both our rigs on and pull them out there with his 2500 duramax, splitting the fuel bill with me. April may be a little sooner than we were planning on though. We need to get our rigs Moab ready. Im on 35's in my runner, and he is on 33's in his xj. After the first of the year im getting some 5.29's put in. I still need a good front bumper and a winch after that, and preferably some rock sliders.

We may just have to be there in spirit on this one.

If everything would go smoothly, I'd be in moab with the fellas during easter jeep safari. Also, Im going to mob (in a car) next week

Is there parking for tow rigs? A buddy and I may be able to make the trip and if we do, we'll plan on towing my pickup out there on a trailer.

There is plenty of parking for tow rigs. Last year Kevin got the spot inside the circle reserved for us based on the number we had coming. Once we got there our numbers where lower, but they let us keep the spot. There is room in that area for 5-6 tents and associated rigs. There is a big open spot off towards the front to park tow rigs (red square). We didn't have to use it last year since we only had 3 4Runner's at any given time, but the space is there.

The good thing about that spot is it has a large covered pavilion under the trees with power. It is also close to the showers (red arrow).

Let's keep our fingers crossed that we can get enough folks signed on to reserve the group/pavilion site.
helo-mech - still going? If so we can swing by Texas and link up with you for the trip out west.
