Classified prices above Kelly Blue Book Value?

I'm in the market for a 2000 to 2003 4runner but am noticing the prices on craigslist etc (private) are well above blue book value.

Is this the norm?

If blue book is $5k, people are trying to get $7.5k etc

Was certainly my experience. The only 4Runners I saw near KBB were real dogs.

Yes this is the norm. 3rd gens have a very high demand and often times the blue book value is a joke. It's all about supply and demand and fortunately for the sellers it's in their favor. Also most sellers will post their vehicle at a higher price to allow haggling room. I do it all the time.

shop in the texas panhandle. Might be worth the drive. They go for blue book or lower here. I gave 3500 for my '97 sr5 4wd with 150k on the odometer.

Mine too, especially in the west, and 5-speeds move quicker. Unless the price is stupid high the only ones that sit around on CL or at dealers have something wrong with them or high miles. Kbb is a joke here for sure. Asking prices are usually lower in the rust belt or the south though.

They say clean inside and out, yet fail to mention the crunched front bumper. I wonder what else didn't get mentioned?

Is 'clean' something you put in the car? "Well, we put some Clean in there and, frankly, it just wasn't enough. So we went with some more; some extra Clean...just to make sure". I just haven't ever seen a car that was advertised as "Clean" or, especially, "EXTRA CLEAN!!!!!" that was worth a crap.

Pass, simply because they don't mention the obvious damage to the bumper. Dude thats a major red flag about other other things that probably need mentioning.

I know this is not what you're looking for, buuuttt might be for someone with the cash, time and mechanical know how. Talk the guy down to $2500, throw in $2500 and you have a 4x4 for the same that you'd spend on 2wheeler.

Pass on the 2000. Keep looking and be patient. There are some sellers that are unaware of the current market in their area will still list based off kbb (they don't spend hours on CL like a buyer does). But they go fast.

Drive a few in the meantime to get a feel for what you're looking for.
