Thanks BigStoke! Saw your 99 Highlander earlier, looking good so far. I always liked those 18" 4th gen Limited wheels.




An update on the Mustang: Andy came by and gave me the pink slip and all the original dealership papers. Signed and ready for transfer. Only problem... he lost his garage key and is waiting for his apartment complex to make a new one. No pics yet.


Got mucho sicko of the rusted drum look.

Snagged a sweet couch for the man cave, too. It would not slide into the back of that H2 according to the previous owner.

There is a nasty noise coming from the drivetrain. I have been looking into possible causes but haven't come up with much. Greasing the u-joints did not change anything. I thought that the diff drop may have led to improper fluid level in the front diff... topping it off didn't help.

I got my buddy to drive the truck while I hung out of the side door clinging to the slider... got this video... any ideas? Initially thought the noise was from the front, but can tell it's from the back... I tried to replicate the noise on jack stands and I couldn't really get the same effect.

I had a bad bearing in the driveshaft that was a causing a similar noise.

I miss my 3rd gen. I haven't been able to drive it much at all lately. I need to get out to King of the Hammers next month and I can't have any problems. I almost canned the trip, but I have new reason to go. I'm meeting with a company who may want to sponsor the truck with their products. Not going to name any companies until there is a deal made.

My home garage, being filled with a stupid useless truck that my idiot brother won't fix, leaves me without a suitable work area. The rear main in the probe is leaking oil faster than I can replenish it. The 3rd gen is making some serious clunks from the rear axle, I'm scared to drive it. I've been up shit creek without a paddle when it comes to fixing either vehicles.

Jacked up the truck by the rear diff, put it in gear and took this video. I thought it was the u-joints or the pinion bearing

I've gotta fix this crap before KOH. It's good to have a friend with a shop. With the truck on the lift, rear wheels and drums removed, I put it in 5th and let her idle. The noise was coming from the wheel bearings. I got this video of how bad the play is:

Ordered some Koyo wheel bearings. I'm not quite looking forward to using the press though. At least the axle seals are still good, don't have to replace those again...

On to the bearings:

Well it's a pain in the ass to take apart the whole brake drum assembly, do a bunch of press work... so instead, John tried out an idea he's been wanting to try.

First thing was removing the cage on the inside of the bearing that keeps the ball bearings in place. Hammer, punch, and vice grip:

With all the balls on one side, the bearing was able to be removed without pressing the rest of the axle apart.0

I had to leave so John finished the job for me with new Koyo wheel bearings. The method was a success, I left at 3 and the truck was rolling at 4:15. She rides smooth as butter now without any noises!

I too am soo ready for KOH! Big johnson and claw hammer easy? Be carefull folowing Jason around. His easy is OMG WTH to a lot of people! Sounds like fun and a good place to test my new skids!

Yes, it was a loud whirring noise audible from inside the truck. I could also feel the vibration in the pedals and floorboard. From outside, it was loud and in many cases, head turning.

Exactly what I was thinking, lol! Jason's wheeling skill is incredible. This year will make last year look boring!

Yeah, the new ones have to be pressed in like normal. The whole job was done in less than 1.5 hours.

Haha THe hammers will almost always dent at least one vehicle in a group. No matter what trail you run. ride with Jay. Im sure he wont mind some dents. Lower big johnson and tack hammer can probably be done without a locker

I'm local to you, and have played around in Holy Jim area over the years, but have not been back there for a couple of years now. Fun to see all of your pictures from there. We used to have a lot of cop action there in the old days. They didn't allow you to "play" on the sides of the road near the entrance. Instant ticket. (Private property, owned by SCE or some other utility.)

I'm amazed you have been able to do all of this work at your house. I have been getting letters from the HOA here is Aliso Viejo because I have 2 vehicles, and one is in a parking space outside.. As they say "garages are for cars", god forbid I should want to have a little hobby space in my garage.

Anyhow, maybe we will see you out on the trails. I'll be at KOH this year. Always a great race to watch! I like watching near the bottom of Jack Hammer and that general area depending on what the course looks like. You get some huge pile ups and entertainment. Tired of the scene over at backdoor. Maybe I'll get back to one of the more remote nasty sections this time.

I recently picked up a 1999 Trooper, similar to your friends I saw in the background of some of your pics. Just starting the build on it, so probably not going to attempt any hammer tails at this time. LOL It will be more of a camping/exploring rig for me, not a hammers vehicle. Do have plans for a Death Valley trip pretty soon.

I have enjoyed your journey with the vehicle, and wanted to thank you for all of the great photos and tips along the way. I'm about to go find some of the SEM paint. Sounds great!! I'm so sick of re-spraying things every year.

Nice to see another local. Yeah, that Holy Jim situation has gotten bad. They have since installed fencing around the side areas, added speed limit signs, and a full on gate at about mile marker 3. What used to be a daily play area became a fond memory. Sucks to pass by only to see a few cops waiting at the entrance. They flattened most of it after the major flooding trapped 9 idiot kids out there.

Aliso Viejo... I feel you. Home owners associations are insane over here. I've gotten away with way too many things, luckily there is no HOA where I live. It's your garage, you should be able to do what you want with it! It's not like you're banging on a drum set all day in there.

PM me with your info. Haha can't wait to get out there, ready for some action.

Oh and as for the SEM, try the Paint Store in Laguna Niguel. It's on Camino Capistrano directly across from the train station. They have a huge rack full of SEM products.

I'll be honest here, I really dislike Mustangs... always have, always will, but this is a nice looking one... Interesting way to pay off the debt, though... Glad you're selling it

I dislike them too. Slow and badly made. Quality of a Ford... ugh. Man, if you haven't worked on one of these, they're not half as well made as a 4Runner.
