COB's '94 Supra Turbo

A friend of mine from work, Justin, does bodywork. He did up my 99 4Runner a while back. Top notch work, which is what this car needs.

Time to unleash Justin’s skills on this poorly neglected Supra. He starts with the wire wheel, removing the old body filler still stuck to the left rear quarter panel.

Underneath, we found a relatively intact panel underneath tons of unnecessary filler.

Continuing with an orbital sander.

Getting in the wheelwell.

It was not long before we realized the filler was around the entire wheelwell.

The next morning and I had something like this… layers of filler showing.

Pulling the dents from the panel. This thing was all sorts of dented.

Side brake duct where the sideskirt once was.

Test fitting and removing further filler from the door jams.

Light coat of SEM self etching primer to protect from moisture.

Next day, welding day. Here comes Justin with the bottle.

Power surge protector:

Welding holes shut. Rivets, be damned.

Quarter next:

Next day, a look at everything in the light.

Work continues:

Test fitment.

First coat of fresh body filler coming into play.

Hammering out high spots.

Coat #2.

Back at it again. This quarter has already been through quite a bit and is already completely unrecognizable. This time it’s getting close to finished, out comes the guide coat.

The other side went very smoothly and quickly.

Just dust on the ground, now…

Great work on the old girl so far ! I had an '88 mk3 n/a that had 87,000 miles on it when I bought it back in 2005... I sold it in 2009 and still miss it! It was the best riding/ handling car I have ever owned! Glad to see both of your soups are in good hands of someone who appreciates them! Keep up the good work! Ps, can't believe you scored the mk4 for so cheap[emoji4]

Agreed! He's worth every penny and then some! He has 15 years experience and fixes crashed Mercedes for a living.

You wanna come help me bleed the clutch again? Haha. It's going to be completely unrecognizable, especially after decent brakes and a set of wheels. A splash of carbon, too.

Thank you smokeshow! The MK3's are great cars, just got some polyurethane bushings for the 89's control arms. The stock bushings were toast! Hoping it handles half as good as the MK4! The MK3's are hard to find in clean shape, would you ever consider getting back into the game? Why did you sell?

I still can't fathom the purchase price myself. The R154 and related transmission swap parts have so far already surpassed the purchase price 2 times over. After all is said and done, the car will have roughly 20-25k into it total.

Lets take a moment to discuss some drivetrain updates:

R154 shifter extension has been completed. This was a brand new shifter housing extended 4.75" to match the MKIV's shifter location.

Tail housing off.

Installed, tail housing resealed with Permatex Ultra Black RTV.

Then I was intending to swap out the 7M bell housing on the transmission to a 1JZ bell, as that's what is required to fit an R154 to the 2JZ. I start by comparing the new bell against the old, and was shocked to find they were the same. They both even had a purple paint splotch, which is indicative of a 1JZ bell. Mind you, the transmission was advertised as having a 7M bell.

I double checked my spare R154, which for sure has a 7M bell, and wouldn't you know, it was different. A 7M bell is worth maybe $50, and a 1JZ bell is worth $350. That sure put my mind at ease!

OS Giken Touring twin plate clutch For those of you who aren't familiar with these, they're one full unit, flywheel and all. The flywheel thickness is reduced, meaning you'll have to run shorter-than-stock flywheel bolts.

2.5mm trimmed off a full length set of ARP flywheel bolts.

And some Energy suspension sway bar bushings/tie rod boots (amongst others for the MK3 and 3rd gen 4Runner)

The right quarter, as mentioned before, needed minimal work compared to the left quarter. Neither are done, so here's more on those.

Starting this update with the right side, the rivet holes being welded.

Welded up, ground down, and sanded.

This includes the wheel well holes, despite the fact that they'll be covered up.

Body filler time.

And set to dry as we move to other aspects of the vehicle.

The passenger side being in such good shape was a great template to get the lines right on the driver side. Here's Justin sharpening up the lines just right.

Continuing onto the passenger side brake duct.

Time to weld more holes.

Checking fitment against the new OEM trims.

Continuing onto a very strange section of damage on the passenger side of the roof, chassis side. The targa has some dents also which will be addressed in the near future.

Taking down the high spots, pulling out the lows.

Moving onto the side of the car, we have some low spots that are pretty tough to see. This is after a light sanding.

Driver door has some dents also.

There's a slight dent in the wheel well that's also getting addressed.
