So I was sick of waiting for anyone to come out with a CAI for the 5th Gen.
While taking everything apart I figured I would take a shot at making my own. With a little trial and error everything turned out great, just not as pretty as anything you can buy for $300-$400 when they come out.
I used 3" ABS parts from the local Home Depot and a 3 X 5.00" AEM aftermarket filter. I love AEM because they do not use oil. Anyone with experience using K&N's know that when you put too much oil on the filter after cleaning it can get all over the MAF sensor causing the "check engine" light to come on. No issue with the AEM. I had one in my precious car and really liked it.
1st remove stock air tube. Using a 22 degree 3" ABS elbow, a 45 degree street 3" ABS elbow, some 3" ABS pipe and 2 rubber 3" connectors fabricate a new air tube from the throttle body to the air box. There are two hoses connected to the factory air tube that need to be reconnected. I simply drilled holes in the new air tube and connected with silicon. I am going to buy plastic nipples that fit two hoses and epoxy into new air tube later.
By doing this you get rid of factory air tube that is corrugated and disrupts air flow. You also eliminate the weird factory box attached to middle of air tube that disrupts air flow. I have heard these are for noise control, and noise control only. By having a box in the middle of the air tube, it reduces noise in the cabin under full throttle. I am not sure if this true, I just elected to discard.
You can stop now and use factory filter or buy aftermarket filter that fits stock box. I elected to use new cone, aftermarket filter for better flow.
To do this you need to open factory air box and epoxy a 3" ABS coupling. I wish I had a better way to explain how to do this. I just attached filter to coupling and positioned on air box lid for best fit. I then epoxied to air box lid and sealed all voids with silicon. In order for the filter to fit I needed to remove a couple a plastic pieces from bottom air box. The inner tube can just be removed. 1st take off plastic tube that goes through fender. This allows access to tube in air box. Remove tube. The bottom air box also needed to be cut a little allowing new filter to sit in air box and have lid close properly. I cut the area out and taped up to seal out as much heat as I could. You want filter to pull all air from factory duct running through fender.
Once cutting was complete and filter fit properly I reinstalled air box bottom and secured all clamps.
