Companion flange swap?

I have an 01 4runner and I I recently bought a used complete 3rd member with 4.88 and arb out of an 04. I got it installed but when I went to mount the drive shaft up it didn't line up right to the flange. I already confirmed both pinions are 27 spline so I want to swap companion flanges to fix the problem.

If I try this will I mess up the pinion pre-load? (Assuming the new setup has a crush sleeve)

I have heard two conflicting things:

1. A crush sleeve does nothing more than act as a lock washer to the pinion nut.

2. A crush sleeve is what sets pinion pre-load and if I swap I could mess up the settings.

I searched several sites but no definitive answer.

I'm confused... Please help.

You could just redrill the flange. Rotate the driveshaft 45* on the flange, mark and drill the first hole, put a bolt in that hole to hold the driveshaft in place and drill the other 3 holes.

Of the 2 choices, #2 is most accurate.
You could drill holes for the new pattern on your current flanges yourself while they are on the vehicle, but that might be a PITA, esp on the t-case end.

Thanks for the reply, after I asked here I really started studying this process via YouTube, ZUK and the FSM. I understand it much more now.

I've since ordered an Inch Pound Torque wrench and I'll just measure my PPL before I remove the flange and swap. It's not that difficult once you understand the relationships between all the measurements.
