Compiled: FJ Springs Lift Info for 4th gen

Did this take trimming or did it just drop in?

Any rear spacers at all?

I had to trim a small triangle from inside the front fender flares to stop the tires from rubbing at full lock when the suspension was a little flexed.

The rear just had the FJ springs, no spacers.

Hey fella's, newbie here

I've done quite a bit of reading here and just wanting to confirm things before moving forward with purchases this week. Posted in the suspension thread a couple days ago and haven't gotten an answers yet.

Just a couple questions before I move forward:

1) any issues with a front and rear suspension swap from a 2014 FJ to my 09 Runner?

2)This 2015 FJ suspension only has 850 miles put on it. Should I still go ahead with getting bilstein shocks now or ride out these with very few miles?

3)Am I gonna need a daystar or similar kit with this setup? I was thinking a 2/1 but not sure if that's applicable to this setup.

I have an appointment set for this Wed pickup on this suspension for $100 so just wanting to make sure it's all compatible before going through with it.

This is my DD so just looking for a more aggressive look and better handling while out on the road.

Ideal Setup:

Front/Rear FJ Springs and Bilstein 5100s at .85
Daystar 2/1 kit?
Duratrac Tires 265/70/17 (have these on the truck already)
New TRD Pro Wheels

If anyone could please help me out ASAP it would TRULY be appreciated!

Thanks fella's!

Anyone?

Supposed to be picking up this suspension tomorrow evening

:help:

I would get it. That is a good price. I'm assuming that it is the standard 4wd shocks since you asked if you should get Bilsteins. If it is the standard, I would go ahead and get the 5100s. If you decide to use the shocks from the FJ, the only thing you will have to do to modify the 2015 FJ setup for your 09 is to grind down the inner steel sleeve on the front bottom shock mount and drill out the hole in the frame for the rear shock to fit correctly. I had to do this for the 2014 FJ setup I have. As for additional lift, I am running the Daystar front 2.5 / Fat Bob's 2 rear setup on mine. It might be a little high for your liking but I love it. I also have a 1/2" body lift.

Recently pulled the trigger to level out and lift my 2008 Limited, turned out pretty well. I used FJ springs with 5100's all around, 1" cornfed out back, and installed 265/65/18's on plasti-dipped rims. Just need a day to black-out the emblems, and it should be perfect.

Does anyone know the difference between the '07-'10 FJ 4x4 springs versus the '11+ FJ 4x4 springs? I noticed that they have different part numbers...

2007-2010 FJ 4x4:
FR #48131-35541
FL #48131-35551
Rear #48231-35321

2011+ FJ 4x4:
FR #48131-35660
FL #48131-35670
Rear #48231-35420

Also, I found that the 2WD FJ springs are cheaper than the 4x4 springs, regardless of model year. If all these springs are a direct swap to the 4th gen 4Runner, what is the difference between them? My assumption is that all the 4x4 springs are pretty much the same, while the 2WD springs might be slightly less stiff and provide less lift. Thoughts?

Apologies if these questions have already been answered -- this is a very long thread.

Lifted

I just completed my lift with some mixed results.

I decided to do new FJ springs via MOOG. I put 81108 on the front and 81081 on the rear and 5100s all around. I ended up going with the 0.85 setting on the front shocks and no rear spacer. Based on the chart in the sticky and others this should have leveled the truck plus give the lift.

Wow, these springs are so much more stiff!

Followed the no spring compressor write up and had a bunch of hiccups, but overall I got the job done.

At this point I have almost a 1" reverse rake with my front top fender wall being 39" from the ground and my rear 38" I didn't make before measurements.

I have the daystar 1.5" spacer I could drop in the rear, but I think that might be too much overall lift for me as I'm not a regular off roader. I'm going to leave it here for awhile. I"m going to get some tires and an alignment and see if it settles at all.

If it doesn't settle much, perhaps I"ll drop back from the 0.85 to stock setting on the 5100s.

Had a heck of a time getting OEM shocks out. Had to saw off the top bolt/nut to get it out. I couldn't loosen the nut due to the center shaft spinning. I did my best to hold it via the flat on the shaft, but no go.

Interesting. I have read here and a number of other places that the Moog FJ springs won't work on the 4Runner, as the bottom coil is too tight for the spring cup. Did you have any fitment issues?

Dang that looks good man. Nice rig!

Some

I had some issues only with the rears. Like you said and I had read as well, the coil was tight and also they don't put a flat on the bottom of the spring. I hit it briefly with an angle grinder to make sure it was engaging the cup. It's not resting on the bottom of the cup, but enough that I'm confident it won't move. I bet after a week or two of driving it will settle I'm. Ride up front is quite stiff.

Some 265/70 tires going on as I type this.

Been meaning to get mine up in this thread. FJ coils, 5100's on 1.75, and daystar 1.5" spacers on the rear springs. 265/70/17 Hercules Terra Trac AT tires. No issues with alignment.

My pics never look as good as it does in person.... :/

FJ 5100 swap complete

Thanks to all of the great advice and write-ups on this forum, I was able to install the FJ/5100 swap in my garage last weekend. I am SO stoked on it! The thing rides like a brand new vehicle. Mostly, the added travel and better damping ability have proved a god send on highway bumps and off-road use. I ended up getting the 5100's at a decent price online (360?) and found the FJ springs from another user on this forum. Total I was in about $550. Decided to swap out sway bar bushings and top-hats while I was at it. Here are a few quick shots I took this morning. 2007 FJ springs and 5100s on all four corners. Fronts set at 0.85". Ill try to get a few better ones posted later.

Thanks to this forum for all of the help along the way.

Has anyone ever used ACDELCO 'professional' FJ rear springs? I am having a hard time finding a set of used low mileage factory FJ springs, but a set of new ACDelco FJ springs aren't too expensive. Anyone know if the ACDelco 'professional' springs as good as OEM springs?

Thanks

What is your front 5100's setting?

So I just went through this whole post and couldn't find the answer (or on google, or on the FJ forums).

I have a chance to buy either the red FJ TRD shocks (brand new and front/rear) for $200 or the Trail teams shocks for $250 (5000 miles, front/rear and negotiable). I just can't find out what the hell the differences are. They're both Bilsteins and not adjustable. But I can't seem to find answers anywhere.

From the 5 minute research I did, it appears that they might actually be the same. I say go for whichever you can get for the best price.

Would it be possible for a mod to edit the original post of this thread?

I've spent a lot of time researching this topic on here, and it appears there is widespread confusion on what springs swap without issue. Judging by the wording in the original post (see below), it appears as if 2010+ FJ springs require a slight modification to fit.

any set from an 07-09 4x4 FJ will be a direct replacement for any 03-09 4runner, but those from 2010's require some slight modification.

There are many members running 2010+ FJ springs, and I haven't seen a mention of a modification being required to install them. (If someone has, please feel free to correct me). The SHOCKS require modification, but not the SPRINGS.

I just recently purchased 2014 FJ stock 4x4 springs but have yet to install them so I can't confirm this personally yet. However the FJ forum is flooded with us 4th gen'ers asking for 07-09 specific springs when it might not be necessary to be stuck in such a specific search.

TL;DR: Someone please confirm that all years of FJ springs fit without issue, and please have a mod revise the line in the original post.

That is correct, any 07+ FJ coils are a direct swap, no modification needed. 07-09 shocks are a direct swap. 2010+ shocks require modification in order to fit (grind down lower shock mount on the front, enlarge stem mount on the rear).

The 5th generation 4runner is heavier correct? Is there a reason why the rear springs from a TE would not offer the same lift advantage as the FJC springs?
