Considering Selling my '12 Trail

I do think there are laws now, about passengers in the bed...

My son just passed his permit test and I had a look in the drivers book. I would have lost big on a bar bet with this one, but apparently, in Nevada, the only restriction on riding in a truck bed is age (18). The only way that section of the book can be reconciled with the one that requires all passengers to wear seat belts is to classify bed occupants as non-passengers. Apparently, they're cargo.

I'm sure insurance valuation is different from actual market valuation, but USAA valued my totaled 2012 Trail with KDSS, Entune and Nav at $37,120(was bought is July and had roughly 8k miles on it), which is what my before taxes price was. All the used trails I have seen for sale are listed around +$34k.

With that being said, I do plan to tell my parents there may be a trail popping up for sale since they fell in love with my truck, and live in Cartersville GA. They say they aren't ready to buy right now, but you never now.

If you ever are in Georgia stop by World Toyota near Atlanta. They give pretty good prices from what I hear, my mom bought my 98 4Runner from there in 2003, gave it to me in 2010.

Keep the 4Runner for yourself and buy the kids a ten year old single-cab Tacoma. Why? Because you can only fit one passenger in a Tacoma. Give the kid a 5-seater 4Runner and it will become the joyride machine for all his buddies. When I turned 16 I got my mom's Astro van and we used to cruise around town with seven dudes in there, looking for trouble...and we usually found it:eyebrows:
I won't make the same mistake my parents did when my kids come of age.

This may seem funny, but it is the truth (well maybe not with the p/u truck bed). When my wife was growing up she wanted a Miata, her parents wanted more of a sedan for her. She use that same 'argument', and honestly it is true. Other kids who had room for others piled the kids into them and were a lot more reckless. Of course giving a kid a 2 seater convertible 'sports car' might not be the best idea either.

Well I posted my Trail for Sale on Autotrader. If someone is looking for an almost new trail then this would save thousands over new.

$37,500 --> Save Thousands? What are people paying for these now?! Sticker on Toyota is 40,500 loaded w/ KDSS. I would assuming people are walking out the door with these for 37 to 38 new, but I guess I could be wrong. All comes down to supply and demand. The shoreline is not very common either. Best of luck with the sale!

I know everything is too expensive! List was over 42,000, I bought it for $39,700. Upgraded tires plus 3m film protection, cargo liners and wind visors easily add $750. So yes that would be saving thousands over new!

I understand where you are coming from, but I have learned a lot of people don't care about options you have added, they just look at new vs used (unless you have some crazy expensive aftermarket option like a S/C on a vehicle). Tires, for example, you paid for them in the sticker price, then again when you upgraded them. You can not except someone to cover your optional personal tire expense. You did spend the money, no doubt, and I don't blame you for wanting to recoup some, but when they compare a new one to yours the new one comes with new tires, at no additional cost. How was list 42k? The 4R's have gone UP in price, not down. What options worth 2k were on the sticker? I look at the price of a new SR5 compared to what I paid and I am shocked! Of course people don't care what you paid for it or what the sticker was, they just compare current numbers. With the current number sticker being lower someone might be able to pick up a new one for the same or a few dollars more than yours. I did not see KDSS listed on your ad, does it have it? Assuming with the 42k it has to have it. List it as it is a big selling point and could tip the sale in your favor! It can be hard to sell a very slightly used vehicle, as these days people either want something that has never been owned, or a really good deal on something slightly used. The 4R is a great truck, yours is in great condition, and in a rare color (well except for HI from what I hear). Hopefully it will sell fast and for what you want!

Just pulled the price sheet:
Trail:$36755
Nav: $995
KDDS: $1,750
Delivery: $880
Chrome exhaust tip: $99
Clear paint protection: $199
Cargo Cover: $189
All Weather Floor Mats: $299
Window Tint: $299
Toyoguard: $699
Total: $42,164.
Agreed Sale price: $39,677. ($2,487 less)
Upgrades: $950
The Michelins new cost about $75 more than the Bridgestones that it came with so that is $300, 3m film guard installed on front side bumpers: $350, canvas back cargo covers $175 and sunroof and door wind visors $125.

I totally get that $ invested in upgrades can be lost, but for the individual who is considering new and sees value in my upgrades my asking price of $37,500 would save them roughly $3,000 over my total investment and $2,000 over buying new. Time will tell if anyone is interested and worst case I have to keep it!!!

It used to be that as a private sale in Georgia, if the vehicle was not registered to a business, the buyer did not pay sales tax, which on a $37,500 vehicle would be a significant savings as compared to buying new or buying a used car from a dealer (7% tax, which is another ~$2,700).

Georgia sales/ad-valorem tax rules have changed in the last year and take effect March 1, 2013. See below.

New Motor Vehicle Title Tax
Effective March 1, 2013, House Bill 386 removes the sales tax and the annual ad valorem tax on newly-purchased vehicles. It replaces these taxes with a new title tax of 6.5% in 2013 and 6.75% in 2014. Here’s what you need to know:

If you purchase a vehicle on or after March 1, 2013, you will pay the new title tax when you apply for the title and register the vehicle.

The new title tax is not due every year but is due each time the vehicle is sold and titled. It applies to dealer sales as well as sales between individuals.

The new title tax is based on a percentage (6.5% in 2013) of the fair market value, not the sales price, of the vehicle as determined by the Georgia Department of Revenue.

You will continue to pay the annual ad valorem tax on vehicle(s) that you currently own.

If you purchase a vehicle in Georgia between January 1, 2012 and March 1, 2013 (when the new program begins), you have the option of paying the new title tax instead of the current annual ad valorem tax. You have from March 1, 2013 until December 31, 2013, to opt into the new program. Note: vehicles purchased out-of-state are not eligible to opt in.

All other existing annual vehicle registration requirements, including annual tag renewal fees, decals and emission tests (if applicable), remain in effect for all vehicle owners.

If I was the buyer of the used 2012 TE and and bought before the March 1st cut-off, I would probably opt to pay the new 6.5% title tax instead of the ad-valorem tax for however long I owned the vehicle, especially if I was keeping the TE for more than 5 years. But selling before March 1st might be incentive for someone to avoid paying the new title tax now and just pay the annual ad-valorem tax going forward.

To the OP, bear in mind that these changes will also apply to whichever vehicles you buy for your kids and yourself, buying and selling before March 1st might prove beneficial from a tax perspective. Good luck!

That would only apply to a buyer that lives in GA.

As a guy that has bought about 8 out of his last 10 vehicles out of state...Anybody who expects me to pay a sales tax when buying from them gets an instant pass. I pay the tax to Oklahoma when I bring it back and register it.

I went round after round with a dealer in TX about this, and finally gave up and moved on when they wouldn't budge.

Whoa! I paid a few hundred $ more for my 13, with basically the same options. The KBB is around 36K in excellent condition. You never get money for accessories added after you purchase the vehicle. Good luck though, I hope you get what you're asking!

Funny thing is I remember back in 1997 I listed my 1994 4Runner for Sale at a too high of an asking price also, never hurts to put it out there and see. I would consider a reasonable offer but I have no problems keeping my '12 Trail. It's too hard to sell a 6 month old vehicle when you have to compete with new, probuably better to keep it at least 18 months and try again.

I went and sat in a 4th gen today that was in so so shape, wasn't very thrilled. I would have to find one that someone kept well maintained to feel good about buying one. It did seem smaller than I thought it would feel. Too much thinking about 4Runners today, time to watch some football!

Very true! Sales 101 = start high - pay high, start low - pay low!

I do like the size of the 5th Gen over my old 4th Gen. Even though it's minimal, it's for sure noticeable!
