Cooper ATW not available in California?

I attempted to order the Cooper ATW at my local Sacramento tire shops. Two of them said they were not available without additional freight fees. One said though they were a cooper licensed retailer, they were not allowed to stock or order them at all. I went with some Grabber AT2s.

I did not want the ATW so bad to pay $100 in shipping. Has anyone else encountered a regional blacklist for certain tires?

The Grabbers are great, did you happen to ask bout the Falken AT3s?

They seem more like a snow tire and being in CA the distributor prob doesn't stock them in September. I have the feeling the dealers bs'd you to push another tire.

These look good though, may get a set for the snowboard season trips to Mammoth and Brian Head, UT.

I go up the hill to Tahoe and wanted a tire that could get me through Donner Pass in a storm. I thought it odd to be told they stocked the ATW in Washington but not California. There are still people in this region who desire a winter tire: me.

They pushed a ko2 and grabber atp. [emoji53]no thanks. Sounds like it was just an issue of : if I wanted them I would have to pay extra. Just wanted to see if anyone else in warmer states ran into this issue of the retailer refusing to stock the tire or even to trade it to a location which could sell it. Probably just a to-bad-to-sad scenario.

As another option there are the Goodyear Duratracs. They were awesome on snow covered inclines on my FJ. They too were M+S severe service rated.

I know. I owned those on my old tundra and they were great. They were $200 more and I decided against them. I've had generals on my wife's crv and highlander and they were surprisingly good considering their price point. Those guys on xoverland convinced me to try them out[emoji848]. I kept asking myself what type of driving to you do mostly? Thanks for the input.

I got mine here in Montana (obviously snow country), but the TireRama manager said that ordering can be "difficult" with Cooper at times.

I'm wondering if the shops just didn't want to go to the trouble to order them, or if they wouldn't make as much profit on them as they would with other brands of tires?

Edit: Should have driven to Montana to get the A/TW's... no sales tax here.

Must all be stockpiled in MN...

... when I bought mine last summer, the dealer I went to (a larger independent in the twin cities area) said they had 176 on hand in the stock 265/70-17 size. Sales guy said they sell a lot of them.

FWIW... I've been very happy with mine. Wearing well, not loud, and good winter traction last year.

Our registration is based on the value of the vehicle (like some other states)... it was a tad over $450 for my first year. Probably not a lot of savings that way -- but with a strawman LLC, you could purchase it here and save, again no sales tax.

I want a p-rated tire. I used light truck tires before and getting the air pressure right and the harsh ride and the additional weight are all undesirable to me now. I'm getting the grabbers. I was more concerned with other members experiences with tire dealers and makers not stocking a certain tire in certain geographical areas.... this thread seems closed. Thanks for the input!
