Core radiator value.........

Just dropped off the old rad at the recyclers, that I pulled from our 1990 4runner(V6, auto, 4WD), and they gave me $21.00 for it. Well, it takes some of the pain off that new $585 toyota rad. I should be thankful, considering the local dealer quoted us over a $1000 for the job?
Tried to find someone local who could use it(ie give it away), to no avail. It just needed a top tank fix(read: about $100-140 locally). Thought others might be interested in the core values going on out there.

I've had and tried cheap rads over the years, you get what you pay for. The original lasted over 20 years without over heating or issues. The new toyota unit is a brass/copper unit and well built(and fits properly!!). Installation was a no brainer, did not even pull the fan.
The truck actually runs just a tade cooler as well(hedge under the half mark on the gauge). The china made units have serious quality and fitment problems. It's best for long term costs and reliability to keep with 1st tier quality parts.

mine is 10 years old and i payed 115$ and its still good. if it last another 10 years then i payed 1/5 what you did for the same performance and longevity. if it doesnt last 10 more years and i have to pay another 115$ which is still half what you payed for again the same performance.
its all personal choice but OEM is not worth it my opinion.

Checked rockauto, the rad for our truck would run over $300 from them. For me, my time is too valuable and I don't need troubles on the road for the extra $300. If we sell our 4runner, most people would rather see an oem toyota unit then aftermarket(ie higher resale value).
The cheapy rads rockauto would like to sell are alu plastic units which are trash. Been there, done that.
