Costco says they won’t install a 265/70-17 load range C BFG KO2

Im looking to upgrade the tires on my recently lifted 4Runner. And I’m thinking to go with 265/70-17 BFG KO2s in a load range C, to keep the weight down and for better handling. However, when I checked with Costco, the sales advisor told me that they won’t install those tires on my 4Runner since they are a load index 112S. My factory Bridgestone H/Ts are are load index 113S, and Costco says they’re not allowed to install a tire that has a lower load index than my factory tires.

Anyone else ever experienced this at Costco?

probably a new employee, would just order online and set up install. I had no issues with my local costco.

Costco doesn't like to install anything but OEM tires on cars. But maybe it's because BFGs suck.

Depends on the Costco. A lot will not and store policy backs them up. A few people on here have had luck at their local one, like you, but seems to be the exception.

I always think the 'load index' thing is interesting, since the 20" tires fitted to the Limited models (245-60R-20's) have a load index of 107... and Limited's are close to the heaviest 4R's in terms of curb weight. One might not be a fan of that size tire on the 4Runner, but clearly Toyota feels it's more than sufficient to carry the weight of the vehicle.

I like my Toyos. The other option was Cooper.

I've had Hankooks, BFGs, Goodyear Duracraps and Wrangler Silent Armor before and the Hankooks were the best out of those but they seemed to only last me 30K miles but I was supercharged at that point and did drive hard on them.

Interesting. I’ve been running the BFG’s for years and never had an issue. May have to try some toyos. I’m always open to a new tire set up. I have just always liked how the BFG’s looked and how quiet they were

i've had issue with one of the tire shop when i brought in my own tire. they said i need to buy the tire from them to install it. so i decided to install it myself and bring it for balancing. when there's a will, there's a way.

This. Costco tire can get ****ing bent as far as I'm concerned; they dicked me over twice on tires for my other vehicle and I refuse to support them anymore. Discount Tire all the way from now on.

They didn't offer much in traction offroad, I've seen people easily puncture sidewalls and they didn't do well for me on wet pavement.

I bought the new BFG Trail Terrain in 255/70/18 for our GX through Costco. They're quite a bit taller than OEM so I called ahead to make sure that there wouldn't be any issues getting them installed. The person I spoke with said they'd do it but that I would have to sign a waiver releasing them of any liability and confirming I understood the change could be detrimental to vehicle function and/or safety. He also mentioned specifically that the load range could not be lower than OEM.

I got a call half an hour after dropping the GX off saying they would not complete the work due to the tires being outside of OEM standards and Costco's variance allowances. I was still in the warehouse so I came back to discuss in person and was met with pretty stiff resistance. After much discussion and calmly explaining that I called ahead specifically to avoid such a scenario, the supervisor allowed me to complete the waiver form and have them installed. I was never argumentative or demeaning and made sure they realized I knew what I was doing and what can happen when changing to a different tire size. The fact that these were narrower than OEM helped alleviate the argument that they would rub or cause other clearance issues.

Clackamas! In his defense, the supervisor was a decent guy. He fell back to reciting Costco policy a few times, but overall listened to what I had to say. I totally get it from their side - liability concerns and he's not interested in losing his job over something so insignificant.

Afterwards he did agree they looked great on the GX. I said 'how funny would it be if it rubbed right now?' which he did not find as humorous as I did.

Interesting. Aloha let me buy a split set once (different wheel widths front and rear) and refused to install them (front tires were essentially new), and then I bought a square set that they wouldn’t install because the car came with staggered widths from the factory. Bastards.
