Couple of tech questions- 95 4r

1995 3.0 Auto

I just recently had my head gaskets replaced after they had blown and also a valve job (they said a valve being off caused the gasket to mess up). When I got it back it didn't run quiet right (dying at idle, really rough idle) so I took it back and they ended up cleaning the fuel injectors, changing/adjusting the throttle cable, and cleaning the throttle body. All of this being done at my local Toyota dealership.

It is running better but dies at idle still while the engine is cold, once it warms up it doesn't have a problem.

So, first question. What could be causing it to die when cold.

My next question/concern is that at highway speed the transmission leaks fluid. After a highway trip having been parked for maybe 5 minutes there was already an approximately 12"x6" cuddle of tranny fluid under the car. There was also more covering most of the underside of the car. Does this mean I need a new/rebuilt transmission or is there some way the fluid can escape that can be fixed with a complete rebuild?

Check the thermostat. I had an old jeep that used to do the same thing and the thermostat was blown. I'd start there first to be honest with you, but then again, I don't know much about toyotas. :fro:
 
if they fiddled with the throttle body check your tps, cold start injector, timing. if you hold the gas will it still die?
 
No if I hold the gas to where it rev's up a 150-200 rpm it idles. I'll have to check the timing when I go back home (hour away at college staying in the dorms). Had to leave the truck there or I would check it now. I'll also see about the cold start injector and tps. Thank you.
 
Also check your exhaust does it smell? Any smoke?

keep us updated...I'm sure someone will be able to help if it isn't any of those
 
The exhaust does definately smell (like its running rich). It's got a new cat converter on it (mine was stolen :redbrick: )


We thought it has a small exhaust leak.
 
I wish I could be fixing this myself but being at college has stopped me from that. My dad replaced the cold start injector and egr valve. He said that the shaky idle and dying when cold.

No progress on the transmission, he said he was going to crawl under and look for the leaks himself before taking it to a transmission shop to just have it rebuilt without knowing what's actually leaking.

Make sure the tranny isn't overfilled. My college student had 4 qts too much fluid in his runner....... Tranny shop wanted $3500 to fix it, I told them no thanks and drained the excess out.
 
We shouldn't have an excess but I'll mention it to him for when he checks it. Its been leaking fluid, and whenever we check it (after we add when it leaks) its never over the fill line.

I bought it having been told the tranny/transfer case had been rebuilt. I'm tempted to just have it rebuilt and know I won't have to deal with it for a while. But I don't control the money atm. College has me broke, and job searching = no luck.

I'd read it before and it had just never sunk in. But I'm gonna be a strict believer of the "trucks aren't bought they're built" Idea. After I get all this mechanical work done I can begin to upgrade some stuff hopefully.

Right now I just want my 4r back. Hate not having it. :moping:
