Cracked exhaust manifold question V8

I am now confused. Is it necessary to repair leaking exhaust manifolds.

Personally, I'm comfortable leaving it alone but I wouldn't presume to advise.

If it's your preference to not fix but you are worried about carbon monoxide, you could invest a small fraction of the cost of manifold replacement in a CO meter or find someone that owns one.

Now I am reading some users here have had leaking manifolds for a while, even more than a year without fixing it. Some have mentioned it does not cause other issues or performance degradation. I am in no way a mechanic and I understand it may depend on the level of leakage/crack. Mine does not make a loud noise at all; I find it moderate, if any and I don't have another 4runner to compare them side by side to recognize that infamous tick sound.

I am now confused. Is it necessary to repair leaking exhaust manifolds.

Mines been leaking for over a year and a half now with no negative effects, besides the damage it does to my pride. I'm not to far from Montreal and travel there often if you ever want to hear what a bad one sounds like. Suppose to have headers put on shortly but that's a long story.

As far as necessary to repair it or not, that's your call. The whole gas leaking into the cabin scenario is a bit far fetched with this situation. If you had a big hole in your exhaust under the cabin then maybe but we're taking small cracks.

Also I've never been in a car with an odorless exhaust....maybe they're refering to a Prius :noidea:

It occurs to me that a CO meter should be able to be used to confirm a leak. The amount of CO might be very small but it seems to me like a good meter should be able to detect something if held in the right spot above the leak.

Maybe someone with expertise in such matters could chime in.

Thanks TRDCal for the offer to come over and check yours. I would certainly be interested because I would want to make sure I understand the sound of a leaking one.

I have also been reading that the exhaust valves may get damaged (if the cold air get pushed in through the crack. However, I guess this hasn't happened to your since your has survived the Canadian cold Winter while leaking.

Yah it's been through 2 winters still running strong. If my ticking gets fixed before you get a chance to hear it, I'd at least be able to tell you if it sounds like mine.

I bought a pacesetter for my 2005 v8 ltd.
It didn't come with the oxygen injection lines, I can't find any manifolds with the these lines integrated.
Anyone else get lucky?
Of course the stealer wants 2K + to re&re the bad one.

For all those with '06 and newer 4runners with the dreaded manifold leak...I found a product that worked...and it was cheap. I bought the part and brought it to my mechanic...all in I paid about $900. I think toyota wanted much more than that for just the part. Ticking noise gone, no emission warnings, and I'm back to loving my 4runner!! Below is my vehicle and the manifold options I found online. I bought the Doorman from partsgeek.com listed first below. I know they have the same part for the V6.

Cracked manifold '05 4runner v8

Apologies in advance, I'm not really mechanically inclined but I just purchased an '05 4runner limited v8. Right side manifold is cracked, and there were no available aftermarket options from what I read on these older threads.
My question is, are there any updates on if there are now other options? Also, if anyone can literally tell me what part it is that I need for this repair for my exact vehicle and where online I can purchase it? I am hoping that it's not still a 10 hour labour cost plus a $1000 part!

so if you get headers do they do away with the cats? or has anyone found a way to delete the o2 sensors in the computer? no emissions in east TN thank god. I would be interested in a header setup.

I did end up getting the Doug Thorley Stainless Steel Shorties. Had them installed a couple months ago, love them. Thank you to all who post on these forums, glad I went with these headers.

In Chicago, I paid $800 for the labor which included welding on the cats and they supplied the bolts and studs.

What causes the manifolds to crack in the first place?

Just wondering why the OEM 4.7L manifolds are so prone to cracking in the first place? Material defect, or just not supported well? Would be a good thing to know if replacing them how to prevent the cracking in the future - seeing as how they're such an expensive PITA.
I have an '05 4.7L and it has cracked manifolds. However, it passed CO emissions with no problems. Cleared out the code with my code reader before the test so I guess the CEL stayed off for a while, but the emissions readings weren't even close to failing. I thought the cracked manifolds would cause a failure but I took it for the test just to see if it would pass. It did, but they're still noisy so I'm going to get them replaced - eventually.

I am now having this "clicking/ticking" during acceleration.

Sad. Got the car with 54k miles last month and it looks like I'm going to end up paying a pretty penny to get this resolved.
