Cracked windshield OE glass?

So, I've got a cracked windshield and although I've had cracked windshields before, it has always been on older vehicles and I never considered replacing the windshield with OE glass.

Is there any benefit to replacing the windshield with an OE Toyota windshield vs. going to a local auto glass shop? I suspect the local shop will cost less but I don't really know that.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks.

Broken windshield

If you have the optional heated windshield/ice melting windshield you may not be able to find a replacement of that kind at a local glass shop.

I'm not sure if there are any cheaper aftermarket windshields available for the 5th Gen. Like Barry 694 said, if you have the cold weather package with the heated windshield, you will be stuck with OEM. I'm afraid you may be in for a shock either way. I had mine replaced this year, and the best price I found was $560 for the heated windshield. I think the standard one was $50 less. I hope your insurance covers windshields-mine didn't!

I had mine replaced due to tiny chips that couldnt be repaired. While it wasn't a big deal and not really noticeable except in direct sunlight, I went to the dealer to have it replaced. They informed me that they don't do glass at the dealership; they send it to local shops that use either eom or oem spec replacements (I used the same shop that Toyota recommended). I also have the auto dimming rear view, etc. It was $750, but with insurance ( my guy is cool and didn't even look at it) I only paid $100. It's perfect and they used the same epoxy mTerial that the factory uses. Silly? Maybe, but worth it to me. Dont go to just any shop however. Make sure it is reputable.

I don't have a heated windshield. I have already spoken with my agent and was informed that a replacement windshield would fall under my comprehensive coverage and thus, a $250 deductible (and a higher premium at the next renewal).

Seems a though there's no advantage to shelling out more bucks for the OE windshield if it's a lot more expensive than a no name brand. I guess I'll just need to makes some phone calls tomorrow in order to compare prices.

I had my windshield replaced last year. A local glass company agreed to get me a dealer glass (with Toyota logo). I just needed to pay my $250 insurance deductible. As other glass also cost more than $250.

Cracked Windshield

A cracked windshield is covered under the "comprehensive" section of your insurance, Which means acts of god, vandalism, etc, and any claim under this should not affect your next premium. Your agent may not know what he is talking about. In any case, if they should increase your premium I would be looking for a new insurance company. My insurance company has no deductibles for comprehensive and the cost is cheap for that type of coverage ($28).

Yikes. 27 years in the business and it still amazes me "my Peers".
Ask your "Agent" the difference in cost to you (premium) between a $0 Comprehensive deductible and a $100 or $200 deductible.
When you get the answer, make a decision as to whether you are with the right agent. Who is taking care of who?
On Comprehensive coverage (which is a NON-Surchargeable loss) the cost to you
makes a high deductible - Rediculous.
A High Deductible takes care of the Agents Loss Ratio (HIS BONUS).
Carry a $0 Deductible on Comp and $500 or $1000 on Collision (Savings for you)
