Crawl Control...What to expect Video

First off, sorry this vid is so sloppy.
Second, Chris had asked me to do this video because he wanted to know what it should sound and look like when using crawl control on his 2010. he was concerned that all the noise and jerking of the vehicle indicated something was wrong.

So just as an FYI.....

i find it works better and isn't so jarring when it's on medium to fast if you're in a condition to use those speeds

I did notice that also, but even then its a bit a rethink to get use to the vehicle being in control....and the clicking, bucking, and flashing is hard to ignore.

First time I engaged crawl control, I kinda freaked out a bit with that noise! As I turned the speed up, it went away, so I figured it was natural and calmed down.

Definitely a bucky ride on its' lowest setting, though I can imagine there may be a few places where it would come in handy at that low speed! :P

Thx for sharing.

I like how you "disconnect the sway bars" and "turn off KDSS"

Should I have said it differently? When the KDSS is on, the sway bars are disconnected (to some degree) When you engage the Crawl Control it shuts off KDSS..

In the video I point out that my sway bars were disconnected, however as I turn on the Crawl Control the KDSS is automatically shut off.

It's my understanding that KDSS is a completely passive system... All the Multi-Terrain Select button/knob affects is the traction control.

However, I could be completely wrong...

Stop trolling man....I posted the vid so people can know what to expect when they use the Crawl Control.....Why pick it apart?

I don't care if it's passive, retroactive, radioactive, proactive, reactive, or anything else. When you switch the crawl on, it renders the multi-terrain switch useless.....no lights, no response on the dial. I just dont want people to be shocked when there vehicle starts shaking and screaming at them when they use CC

Pretty sure KDSS system is independent of the Multi Terrain Select system.

You may very well be right, even though when you switch the multi-terrain to "Rocks" it unlocks the sway bars (I thought), this does not change the point of the video....

I should have been more clear in my post. the video is no to explain KDSS or Multi Terrain.... it's just to show you what to expect when you activate crawl control so you don't think the vehicle is about to eject you when it kicks in.

Why are you guy so worried about this? I don't claim to be an expert, I simply wanted to be helpful......I do sincerely apologize for not knowing the relation between the Crawl and KDSS. Like I said, i'm sure you are correct and the KDSS has nothing to do with CC or MT, but that was not to goal of this little clip.

On a side note, i'd love for us to find out exactly what causes the KDSS to allow the sway bars full mobility. whether it be always able to disconnect on its own or whether turning something on a setting allows it to do that? maybe just putting it in 4LO will do it? ya know? i don't know, but i'd love for us to find out so we know. cuz i'd love to know. That can be started in a NEW THREAD

Because there is a big difference between if KDSS is on or off when offroading and crawling, situations where the crawl control would be used

I was really responding to Phaedrus, just adding some FSM info on how it works.

lol, this is now a KDSS thread.

From the description in the FSM, it opens and closes the 2 solenoids based on wheel speed, steering angle, and yaw sensor. So it should work regardless of 2hi/4hi/4lo.

First time i tried crawl control is scared the shit out of me! only 250miles on the odometer and in the middle of nowhere!

Also i want to know about this disconnecting KDSS, as i thought it was a system in itself.

Multiterrain mode "changes engine power and traction control system to enhance off road drive ability"

Im new to all these systems, even the rear locker, so any extra help outside the book, i am interested in

I have used the Crawl Control for up hill, but all the noise is too much for down hill. I usually use 4 Low and hold it in gear 1 or 2 for a quieter decent.
Maybe I should give it a chance and try it again for downhill, but it really bothers my co-driver/wife. I'll never get her to use it.

Thanks TOY2G for posting this; I totally get why you posted it...first time I used it I kinda freaked out but then I did hear it does make some noise but a like others said just move it to medium and it runs smoother.

This is a pic of my first big hill I did with the T4R this past June on a recovery course. I had the full Monty on; crawl control; terrain select and lockers; I figured might as well try it all out. The thing just literally crawled up the hill; during one point as I was being spotted I stopped (had the speed dial too low)and the spotter waved like don't stop; I just click up the speed dial and it just easily went right up! Thanks again for the vid

Thanks for the video! GOOD JOB!!

I only wish I had seen your video before I put our new 2014 TE into Crawl Control mode. All that noise & bucking, etc. scared the crap out of me. I too thought the thing had to be broken. So far I haven't used it on a trail.

Our salesperson had never experienced CC before, so I took the TE to the dealer and demo'ed it for her. She was shocked & surprised, but didn't say much--actually pretty funny.

First off, I'm not posting this to offend anyone. There are a couple of things that aren't technically accurate so I'm just trying to clarify a couple of things. KDSS is a passive system that does not disconnect the sway bars. It "slacks" them under certain conditions dictated by the activity of the fluid and pistons in the system.

Crawl control and multi-terrain select can't be used together. They're both kind of fancy ATRAC systems to control wheel spin. Some of the noise you hear when crawl control is on is a lot like the noise you hear when ATRAC is on and a wheel is spinning. You can use crawl control with the locker on (don't use multi-terrain select often enough to remember if you can use the the locker with it, but I suspect you can). I like crawl control for long, steep climbs or descents that don't have any obstacles and you want to maintain a constant speed.

Best thing to do is get out there and play with the systems in controlled situations. Learn their advantages and limitations before you get yourself sideways.
