Cup holder insert mod idea. Thoughts?

Good looking out guys. Glad to see I'm not the only one dissatisfied with the cup holder design.

I put up my OP trying to spend as few dollars as possible with an easy mod. The compression springs are <$2.00 ea. Just gotta convince myself to sacrifice my divider insert and get it done.

Or does anyone have access to a 3D printer and software? I'm sure someone can print something out that's better than the OEM insert and make a few bucks off of us forum guys.

So getting back on topic I spotted these on eBay:
2011-2016 TOYOTA TACOMA OEM (LEFT) FRONT CONSOLE CUP HOLDER INSERT 66991-04012 | eBay

Toyota Tacoma Front Console Cup Holder Inserts Genuine OEM OE | eBay
The seller claims you can use these in a 2005-2009 Tacoma if you remove the center divider....I wonder if they have the same as ours? I looked it up and it looks identical.

Does anyone know a 2005-2016 Tacoma owner so you can compare a 4th gen cup holder setup to theirs? If so then you can ditch the center piece and use a set of these to solve the problem. Just a thought.

Yeah its different. Someone has to have a solution. this thing is terrible.

If you decide to go with the spring idea I would suggest going to your local hobby shop and looking at RC car/truck shock springs. They come in varying "rates" and sizes according to scale (1/16, 1/10 , 1/8 scale)

Yes people whom never been in one or a pathfinder (like I had ) have no idea. I used to pull the insert and put a 20oz Gatorade or Powerade it was awesome. And the cup holder in the door was by the front I miss that 270hp v6 sometimes

ha! my wife has done this at least a few times. my frontier had perfectly iphone-sized door pulls in the armrest and she always put her phone there (and her hair ties & bobby pins & gum wrappers). now it just falls through and i get a laugh every time. the storage space in the doors are garbage, too! do they really expect us to put a cup in there? the frontier's were great... had a cupholder in the door, right next to my leg that was the perfect size for an empty starbucks iced venti cup that i would use as my trash can. nothing like that in the runner :\

I have a 2016 Tacoma and a 2008 4Runner. I'll compare them tomorrow if they are both home at the same time. IMO the cup holders in the new Tacoma are kind of hinky as well. I've switched to always buying 16 oz. screw top bottles. No more coffee in the truck.

ugh, the 4th gen cupholders are such garbage. the whole cockpit makes me pine for my '09 frontier. perfectly sized DEEP cupholders with removable inserts. my coffee tumbler fit perfectly in the insert, nalgene or hydro flask fit perfectly with it out. the armrest and window button placement irks me, too, but i digress...

After reading this, I can't understand why you even purchased a 4Runner. Ugh... worst vehicle ever!

See, this guy knows what's up.

i hve been toying around with retrofitting the cupholder from my 03 accord into the ole 4runner. accord cupholder slips over the e-brake handle, so it needs a dremel's touch and some work. the size does mostly fit. this is my next project after ATF exchange and gear fluid change.

edit: im sooo sorry that pic is so huge. stole it from ebay.

I just use a 20oz Ozark Trail Tumbler with the cup holder arms set to the center position and it works great. Its a snug fit so the tumbler doesn't move at all. 20oz Ozark Trail Tumbler, $7.74 at Walmart or you can buy a 20oz Yeti which are identical in size. They also sell them in different colors to match your truck.

Don't forget the slide lid :thumb:

Do you have any problems with the lights in the cup holder, I'm quit working

The bulb is under the center trim where it meets the the little tray. Just twist counter clockwise. It's a tight space if you have chunky fingers.

I just removed my center trim piece and I have a metal bar going across it covering the opening to the cup lights. I may have to remove the entire center console just to get to the bulbs.

I must be in the minority, this is probably the best cup holder I've had in a vehicle.

You can argue politics, religion, food, whether or not country music is bad or horrible, but in this instance you're just plain wrong. :)

I believe it was designed by an intern on Friday, and the following week he was fired and began working for GM.

I bought those, they fit good but are not very secure.. need to figure out a way to secure them snuggly without making it permanent
