The backup camera in my LE is pretty good, but I want to build something better. My issues with it are
- Water / Ice can cover up the imager
- No lines on the screen as to where the corners of the truck are, and no aiming assistance like on a ford pickup
- The visibility at night is crappy
- My folding hitch basket (when folded up) completely covers the visibility
- It's good for aligning trailer hitches and spot checking for kids and pets, but sometimes I want to see from up higher, to know how my utility trailer or boat is riding on the highway. I'd like to know if the load has shifted, stuff like that.
I'm looking around at security cameras or go-pro like cameras to mount up high, possibly under the spoiler or on the ceiling behind the glass. I want to add lines to aiming, and tap into the stock head unit. Also considering adding a spotlight or IR LED array to go with it to improve nighttime visibility.
I'm an EE, and this stuff would be easy for me to design and implement. If I actually get around to building it, I wouldn't mind making a few more copies if anybody else wants one (I'm not soliciting for business here).
