Custom USB Mount inside of Front Armrest of 2013 SR5?

Hello,

I just purchased a new 2013 SR5... love it! I noticed in the front armrest that there is what appears to be an empty port covered by a plastic tab. I'd like to place a USB port (or a pair of them) in that spot so that I can leave my Seagate Satellite WiFi Entertainment hard drive in the car and have it keep its charge via that (new) USB port.

Can anyone here tell me whether there exists a "plug and play" USB solution that can be easily added to that area of the vehicle? Or would this be something that would need to be custom-made? If it would need to be custom-made, I'd love to know where to start.

So- short answer would be: "No, you can't do that (easily) because there is an attachment screw under there.".

Thanks! I'm excited to get it going. I've created a few of my mp3 playlists and have added a ton of kids movies to the drive.

I do have the USB and other outlets under the radio and climate control system, but no ports or outlets within the center armrest/console. That's where I really want an extra USB, so I can hide the hard drive away and leave it always plugged in. Hence, this thread. :D

Yeah, GoFlex Satellite fits perfectly in a center console.
However, it needs quite some juice (amps) to charge the battery. You can do your own experiment: measure charging time using USB port of your PC and AC adapter. You'll see the difference.

So I would suggest investing into a decent power inverter (hence, even with USB ports). Antman has installed one, look through his build thread.
 
It should be pretty much straight forward putting a USB in there provided that you find the appropriate flush mount usb socket and what not. I am not sure if you are just looking for power or power and data into the stock head unit, but either way should be pretty straight forward.

The only thing you need to watch out for is if you want to mount it to the left of the 120 volt outlet, there's the plastic vent pipe running under there. It's about roughly 2" of clearance between the spot you are thinking about and the vent pipe, but you will see once you get the center console out.

I recently installed a 12 volt cigarette lighter socket in that exact spot and it just barely cleared the vent. However, i think a usb port would likely be smaller and not any longer than a cigarette lighter socket.

Sorry for being obtuse, but how would you surmise data to the head unit via an auxiliary USB port is a "straightforward" modification to the truck?
