CV Axle Replacement

Hey guys.

Got 158k on my 04 and need to replace both CV axles. The boots are shot and I'm going to replace them because hopefully that will stop some serious frnt end clacking sound. Toyota can't isolate the problem. We've done frnt end alignment and brakes and still clunk, clunk, clunk everytime the right front bumps. Really irratating. :ybrick:

Anyhow, where can I find instructions and/or video on replacing a CV axle?

Toyota uses NAPA rebuilds, any opinions on where to get my rebuild axles?

Toyota uses NAPA rebuilds, any opinions on where to get my rebuild axles?

I bought them from rockauto.com because NAPA wanted over $100 each. Rock was $50 each.

Just replaced the axles on a 2000 Tundra. Took an hour and 45 mins.

I could not get the differential plugs (fill and drain) out to save my life and they started to strip. One of the guys at Tundra Solutions suggested torching the plugs and the area around them and then apply a couple of pieces of ice to the head of the plugs. Came right out.

Thanks everyone for the help and the links. I replaced both CV axles. I agree the drain plugs are a *****! But I got them in and all back together.

however, I noticed now I have a two leaks! The first is the drain plug. No biggy, I'm going to replace both the filler and drain plus seals since they are almost stipped out.

The second leak is the passenger side, where the CV axle enters into the differential. I'm getting a half dozen drips over night. I suspect the seal is shot.

Anybody have any ideas what this could be? How hard is it to replace the seal? Any tutorials out there? I'm pretty ticked since its going to take a good hour to pull the CV axle out and replace this seal.

Check out my thread....replace the seal it's 10-18 bucks depending on which side I even posted part numbers. I had to do both. Really pissed me off but i'm a month or so leak free now...

The Axles seals should not be too hard to replace, just make sure you don't score the bore when you pull it out. I personally have always had bad luck with axle seals or shaft seals, even with the proper tools the seals come out looking like origami instead of just popping out like they should.

I just used a big screw driver and pryed them out...it was pretty easy and it just popped out as the whole thing...

The best price I found on them were from summit racing. I wouldn't normally have though to check them but they had the lowest price and they ship same day.

rock auto.com had new cv's for less than 50 each. The seals I grabbed from the dealership.
