Looking for a 118C (capacitor model).
I'll try to semi hard wire it to my SUV by running the wire up the A pillar to the headliner then down by the rear view mirror.
Yes , it's to record some of the nutty drivers around my town and on my way to school drop off. Tons of people gaming red lights and 4 way stops.

I have the blackvue Dr-650 1 channel(2 channel available more a bit more $$).
It does everything you mentioned above.
It doesn't only record during impact, it actually senses motion as well.
For example, someone walks by your driveway at night, it will start recording.

I have a Street Guardian in my 1999 3rd gen and a Blackvue 650 dual system in the 2012. I like the Blackvue a lot better. The video is sharper in the 650 although both are 1080p and I like the fact that I can access it via my smart phone without having to pull the memory card out like I do in the SG.
What made me take the leap was an accident I had last year. A guy pulls out to my right across 2 lanes of traffic and pulls right in front of me and hits his brakes. I tried to avoid him but couldn't. He said he had the right of way and I was at fault and I said he pulled in front of me and hit his brakes. Needless to say, none of the witness stopped to chime in. So it was his word against mine. Eventually he was ruled to be at fault. If he had lied about where he pulled out from the outcome might have been different. After that, I made the leap so I will have an independent witness...my camera.
I also like the fact that it is on duty even when the truck isn't running. It records events at night; if you get too close to the sensor or if you hit the truck. It is low profile and not obvious when you look at the windshield. I have it hidden behind the rear view mirror so I don't see it when I am driving.
I catch a lot of bad drivers on the video but I don't do anything with it. I just record things for my own protection.
Good luck with which ever dash cam you decide to purchase. It is worth it to me.

Does the app work for you? Because it has terrible reviews in the app store and it says it needs the app to change settings

Yes the app works for me (on Android). Yes, you need the app to communicate with the control module to make changes.
It's not the greatest app but it works. You must update the firmware in the control module before you can connect to it though. It was a interesting experience trying to do this but I figured it out following the directions on the web.:ybrick:

I'm going through this right now, and it's been a huge help. Our local PD previously announced that they were no longer responding to non-injury accidents, and that parties should just file reports online.
Insurance companies do not want to pay you for damages, especially when the mechanism of injury is disputed. Sometimes you have other drivers that see things differently than you; others that are willing to just lie about what happened, and then it turns into a he-said she-said. My secretary was sideswiped and had door damage. The other driver said she hit him. She ended up eating her $500 deductible, as no liability was assumed by either party.
[MENTION=112589]davester00[/MENTION] I had the Eprance version of the camera you linked to. Bought it off Amazon two Christmases ago, and it stopped working. The screen shows "IO Error" which the forums indicate a firmware update is needed.
I bought another highly rated $100 camera off of Ebay, the Rexing V1.

Here is the Street Guardian SG9665GC mounted and hardwired into the console fuse box. It has (I believe) the exact same enclosure as the A118C but different internal components.
In this photo the mirror is moved aside.

Reasons for Dashcam
Howdy. I find these dashcams very interesting and am curious as to what the main reasons are for having one? I guess I can see two reasons: (1) Recording in the event of an accident in the front area of the vehicle and (2) recording different scenery. What are the other reasons folks have these installed? Your first reason is why I've had a dash cam for the last couple of years. Purely a CYA move but now I can't stand driving a car that doesn't have one installed.
Thanks. I actually somehow skipped page 2 of this thread where same question was asked. Im not sure that it was answered fully though...? Surely there is more to the expense than just protecting yourself from the low chance that someone crashes into you AND your insurance rejects the claim or gives you some grief about it. That just seems very low percentage to me. Maybe I am dead wrong....?
