This forum doesn't see much action compared to the "other" 4runner forums.

Huh? You do realize that this forum is, by far, the most active 4th gen 4runner forum on the internet.

The fee will start April Fool's Day.

Dude, when did I become a "dude"? Anyway, I would like to take it up with Gatorgreg and Koz is right, lets wait til Gatorgreg gets back which will be AFTER April 1st.

Thought I posted in this thread last evening.
I guess the forum software is more messed up than we think if posts are disappearing. :D

Going from a "free" site to a "fee" site can be a Slippery Slope.
I have found over the last 12 years or so that when a site is free visitors and users of the site are usually more patient
and understanding when it comes to software problems and site outages.
When a site is charging a fee, subscribers can become less patient and understanding concerning site performance issues and/or problems.
No matter how small the fee, there may be some people that feel since they are paying to use a site they are entilted to be more vocal and critical of site operations, etc.
I am not saying I agree with that at all, that is just how I have seen this turn out with other sites that went from free to fee.

Obviously if the owner of the site faces increased costs a way needs to be found to pay for it.
Increasing advertising revenue or going to a "fee" based structure appear to be two options.

If the web host has to now charge for their services then the owner owes it to himself and the forum members to
shop around to make sure the pricing the current host may start charging is competitive.

Hopefully, this post will not disappear this time. :biggrin2:

I'm in. $12 a year ain't so bad.

I have a debit card (I'm 17). BUT you best update the software, this is OLD as saggy boobs.

There is a wealth of info, and hey shit ain't free no more. With the recession we are going into, expect this to happen everywhere.

I suggest something that is done in another forum I belong to:

http://www.bladeforums.com/

As a basic member, I can't do searches and can't send a private message, but with a gold membership, you get that and more, of course it costs money. Come to think about it, I can't even post a picture in that forum.
:iagree:
That's worked pretty well over at Blade. I would guess a lot here will move over to YotaTech rather than pay a mandatory fee to stay. When a fee becomes mandatory, there tends to be a lot of "pushback" from the community at large.

A dollar a month... not bad at all, it'll keep the trolls away from the forum.

I agree with Koz, it does look like an early April Fool's.

I for one will move on to a different forum if this becomes pay to play. Not that I don't believe in supporting this site; I have two stickers after all.

I own and administrate a video game and rpg forum. I do not charge a thing despite the fact that it does cost me money to have the site. I believe that developing communities on internet is far more important than making money. I would never ask or expect my users to pay me. That being said, I do have a Paypal donation button available for those that would like to help out. I only put it there after quite a few users asked about one.

As for your costs, domain registration is generally 30 bucks a year. Monthly hosting can be had for less than 10 bucks a month. Heck, I host my forum on a reseller account that costs me $23 a month. I resell hosting on my server to help defray my costs. In the end, I pay very little. And the joy, camaraderie and limited celebrity status ( ) I gain from the forum more than make up for the few bucks a month I end up having to eat. And having to pay for your forum software is crazy also. There are far superior packages out there for nothing. SMF is one of them. I use it and LOVE it!

I also hope this is just an April 1st joke. If not then I might be taking my T4R.org sticker off.

I'm leaning to the April 1 theory.
This site must be earning something from the ads to keep it afloat. It may be minimal or then again, Thai and the boys may be raking it in bigtime.
If it isn't a joke, then consider the premium membership ideas being floated.

I hear what you are saying. I have had a auto enthusiast web site for the last 12 years.
About 3-4 years ago I looked around for a new web host since I was not happy with the price & performance of the one I had at that time.
Since I foot the bill for my site and do not charge for it saving a few bucks helps.

Anyway I found my current web host which provides me with:

- 10GB of disk space
- 300GB of monthly bandwidth
- 100 email accounts
- 10 MySQL Databases
- 50 Email Forwards

I just renewed for 3 years at a cost of $2.79 per month.
Yes, you read that right $2.79.

FYI, I just renewed my .org Domain for 4 YEARS for $33 total.
Also, renewed my .NET & .COM Domains for 3 YEARS for $30 each.

BTW, in the 3+ years I have used this web host they have seldom, if ever, experienced ANY downtime. Price & performance, they do it for me.

This company must be doing something right if they offer these services at this price and can afford to air their commericals during the last 2 or 3 Super Bowls.
Too bad some of their commercials are a little too risque for TV. I guess that is why they have them on their web site. :D

Sorry if this post is a little off-topic. I does prove my point that I posted earlier in this thread that shopping around for web services can be financially beneficial
if one has to pay for these services.

It is exactly to the point. Webhosting need not be that expensive if you do some research.

I am also leaning toward the early april fools joke; however, if its not I don't understand why you wouldn't put a donation button on the site and see if you can cover costs with that. If you did make it a pay many people would leave the forum and as many of have said it will be difficult to get new members.

I just hope this is an early April Fools Joke.

Gatorgreg is on vacation now, but i will talk with the owner about what you guys have said. In the past, he's been relatively receptive of what we have to say...hopefully, he will be this time.

Vis a Vis a fee for participation. If you would like to retain my services for $1.00 per month I will attach my CV. That being said, throwin down for good site sans trolls is well worth it IMHO. In any case, let me know about the Job Opening. only thing is, my scorpions come with me.

That IS the way we roll :dancin:
