Hey all,

I know that this forum is having some issues over the past 2-3 weeks. Gatorgreg and the owner of hardware/software are working to fix it.

Sorry...and hang in there.

Thanks for the update . Are they going to upgrade the forum software ? There are so many improvements since this version and it makes it a lot easier for Admins and Mods to do maintenance . With the new versions you can add mods and hacks with simple plugins now . Pretty sweet !

To be honest, i have no idea...at this time, the owner is letting us use the server space for free...so, we're not in a position to demand much.

Thanks from Wife

Look at it this way. When the server is down, I am on the forum less which makes the wife happy!

(Of course I can make up "t4r time" with other forums - guns, knives, flashlights, computers, camping, other automotive sites, etc)

I'm afraid it's time we finally started charging a fee for the forum. The money is needed to upgrade the site. I'm leaving for Hawaii tomorrow so I don't really have time to announce all the details just now, but I just wanted to prepare everyone for what's coming. I'll be back from my vacation in about 2 weeks and I'll announce the details at that time. Don't worry though, the fee will be nominal.

Are we talking mandatory, or by means of contributions similar to YotaTech? Because people will still be able to access it through Google for free. Have you thought about how many people you would lose to this change, not to mention the younger members who do not have credit cards? What's most likely to happen is people will move on to free forums.

Me thinks "nominal fee" directly proportional to length of trip, # of cocktails, "extra curricular" activites, etc.

Don't worry Josh220, maybe mommy and daddy will spring for the site fee! (cheaper than a 4Runner)

I own a forum in a different hobby and there are fee's to cover . Domain fee's , Server / Hosting costs , renewing your VBulletin License etc... Getting someone to look after things when they break ;)

I come here everyday and really like this place ,the people ,the advice , its a great place to check in once or twice a day . With the amount of members here it wouldn't be much they would have to ask for to cover expenses.

There are lots of ways to pay , Paypal ,Credit Card , Send a money order .

I'm not associated with this place other than being a member but I know what its like running a forum and all the issues that go with it .

If a fee is what it takes to keep this forum being as great as its been, I'm all for it.

By charging a fee, some of the spam that I've seen in the subforums would be eliminated too.

I have credit cards and debit cards, I was simply asking about the 16 year olds on here that may not.

As for my mommy and daddy paying for the site fees, they probably won't need to since I am financially independent. I paid for my truck on my own, fully paid off, as well as all of the mods on it. I think I can manage a few bucks to pitch in.

:xnuts:

me thinks this fee thing is a little to close to April Fools day.

I could be wrong?

I wish that this is a joke, but due to the cost of the upgrades, Gatorgreg and the owner have reluctantly decided on the annual fee. I am personally against it, but it doesn't look like i have a choice in the matter...either pay a fee and get upgrade version or the forum dies. :(

We have bounce around the idea of charging $12/year for each member. It's equal to a year's subscription to Car & Driver and this forum provides way more info than any magazine about the 4runner. :) With the new software, we can then allow paid members full access, while visitors will not be allowed to read much of the forum.

Again, the above proposal is a work in progress among admins/owner and mods.

So what exactly needs to be upgraded? Vbulletin? The server hardware? Overall your still not talking about much money... And going to a paid membership is going to destroy the active community here, and filter out tons of new members from ever signing up.

Yotatech relies on contributions and not a mandatory fee to become a member and becoming a pay site might hurt the site a bit but if you offer extras for becoming a contributing member that would help keep members here and I'd like think with the wealth of information on here most of the regular users will contribute;I know I will.

I agree, offer some forum options, custom titles, etc. for a fee....

Or come up with a set donation mark we need to get to for new hardware (or vbulletin licence), but if you go full pay-site, many (if not most) users will find an alternative, and bringing in new members will be that much harder.

OK, when were you going to let me know? And how did you come up with a $12 fee? While I am at it, Mods don't get paid a dime, we do it for the "love" of this forum. Plus, going on vacation at the same time your asking for fee's seems a little insensitive.

I suggest something that is done in another forum I belong to:

http://www.bladeforums.com/

As a basic member, I can't do searches and can't send a private message, but with a gold membership, you get that and more, of course it costs money. Come to think about it, I can't even post a picture in that forum.

Anyway, I think this should of been handled differently.

This forum doesn't see much action compared to the "other" 4runner forums. Now with a $12 fee. A lot of people will take off. You have to do what's necessary but at least upgrade the colors, a 4th gen sub forum, better layout ....ect...
