Deals on 13 trails?

Just called again and finally spoke with my original rep (before I saw this). Also had a brief chat with the finance manager... Getting the "luxury" of buying a vehicle in Cali means Cali tax vs the lower 6.25 texas tax.

hmmm, i thought that if you are going to register a vehicle in another state, you would forgo the tax and pay it when you register the vehicle in your resident state.

i know when i was going to buy a lexus back in september in MN, they were going to charge me tax for ND when i bought it since i lived in ND and then send the registration paperwork to ND or i had the option to forgo the tax and pay it when i registered the vehicle in ND.

doing some quick research, cali is the upmost scrooge on taxes.

the only thing i can find is this :

"An out of state resident can buy a car in California, and NOT pay California sales tax. But, generally, the car needs to be shipped out of California, not driven out by the buyer."

the only other thing i can find is to get a temporary tag from texas and slap it on the car before leaving the dealer.

edit : you could try the "temporary operating permit" route also.

also one last thing i found :

"If you buy the car and take possession in CA (from a dealer), you pay the CA sales tax (but no TX sales tax). When you bring it to TX, you are only on the hook for title/reg. fees. The only way around it would be to have the car shipped. Then you pay TX sales tax and title/reg. fees (but no CA sales tax). You are never double-taxed."

i did find a 2012 thread in a bimmer forum that talked about this, pretty much your going to have to truck it out of state to get around the CA tax. the driving factor is "if you drive it off the lot, your going to pay the CA tax."

I've bought cars in other states then driven them to California where I paid taxes. Based on the tax rates of most states I'd LOVE to have paid sales tax in the purchasing state.

Hoss, it's going to cost you at least $1,100. in taxes over what they would be in Texas. There is no way the fee for shipping your rig only 1,300 miles straight East on Interstate 10 will exceed that. That's not even mentioning the cost of fuel, hotel, etc.

I checked on shipping a car from Tennessee to California (2,200 miles) a couple of years ago, and I seem to remember it was going to be about $850.

The only alternative is to take some time off from work and just take a vacation to California. It's a very uncrowded time of year, and San Diego is one of the world's great cities to visit. After all you'd have a fabulous rig to tour the Golden State in...;^)

Maz, I saw the 2013s at Frank Toyota that you noted in your post--I ended up going with the 2014 Trail (premium)--I was lucky to get the friends and family discount from the fleet guy--$38,200. At least in the SD area, I did not see much of a price difference from the 13 to 14 versions. Moreover, based on my research, it appears that all the 4Runners hold their value pretty well--so we have that going for us--which is nice. m

Great job Marty, congratulations on your new rig ! The only thing better than a new vehicle....is a new, new model vehicle. Are you driving the '14 already, or was this an order?

I don't think you looked at the other option, trucked to the state border. that is an option, but your going to have to find a dealer that will do that, and I don't think many will from what I have read, its the worst PITA to do paperwork at the border than if it was trucked end to end.

the other thing is to have it a bill of lading saying its going to be trucked outside the state to get around the ca tax rule, but that's more paperwork/hassle that may be worse/better than trying to do it at the border.

now the best scenario would be to find a deal in the surrounding states bordering TX, I think they will be more willing to do what was given to me, pay the neighboring state tax (TX) at purchase outside of TX since bordering state reciprocate the minor hassle to sell to nearby customers outside of state lines.

I'm running too low on time & patience (with the holiday next week,a birthday trip in two weeks, child on the way in 3 to 4 weeks to pursue the shipping option after all. [10-14 days for the dealer to do an MSO form + 2-3 days delivery]

that all we can do is give options, up to you to pick the one that fits you the best.

other thing you can try is cars.com to find one nearby in a reasonable price range, color, options. do your haggle over email and finalize everything.

I have seen people do that and get decent deals out of state or in state further out.

I did that when I was trying to get a 2013 lexus gs350 awd. trade in value didn't work out but we did finalize on the price for the car.

could try that before heading to CA and doing that.

Seriously Hoss, take your time on the way back and break that new rig in right. I did the same fly in / drive out thing two weekends ago, and based on my short experience you're gonna' be glad you pulled the trigger on a Trail.

wanted to give everyone a heads up on a 13 TE Black/Black, loaded, w KDSS that I found in TX, the sales guy Larry Swan was superb, and I was a bit sad I wasn't able to purchase from him since I'm going after a 14 TE premium, but told him I'd send others his way. If interested, please ask for him. It has under 10k miles, already has XD wheels and tires, internet price is $35.5, but over the phone he said there is 1-2k wiggle room to make a deal since it's on a non-toyota lot... and because he was trying to sway me from the 14 TE... it does have KDSS as he verified the VIN at a toyota dealership for me... anyways, hope it finds a good home, possibly to someone on here...

[MENTION=47936]Maz[/MENTION] - haha I guess I could've kept it simple by saying "I have a lot on my plate" I live by the #Shark Mentality philosophy...keep moving and keep surviving Definitely some dark wheels and either Duratracs I've read so much about or the Hankook MTs (which were awesome on my Taco, I just found I didn't use them as much to justify an MT for more than the look)

tell me about it. ive been waiting since 9-25 when i ordered mine, was told it hit port on 11-13 and now i have ADD waiting for it to be railed to the region center and trucked to the dealer.

on top of that, we are getting 2-4 in of snow tonite, started about 2pm CST and will go most of the nite.

hoping i could get it before the first snow and nice pics, but oh well.
