debating muffler swap

I've got a 14" Magnaflow welded into the stock exhaust with a 4"x14" tip. It sounds great but the wife thinks it's too loud, and it does have more drone than i'd like.

I'm considering trying a different muffler, i've got a couple Hooker Aerochamber mufflers I never used on my Mustang that i'd like to try out. They're about the same size as the Mag on it now, and i'm looking for opinions. I searched youtube and couldn't find any videos of an Aerochamber on a 4.7, but have heard a few with Flowmaster 40's. Now, we have Chevy 4.8 vans at work with Flow 40's and while they're not the same engine or exhaust setup, they have a nice deep rumble but actually seem to get mellower as you use more throttle, until about 3000 when they start to scream. The Aerochamber has a sound similar to Flowmaster, more so than Magnaflow but it's got characteristics of both.

If you've never looked at one, it's got a chambered core designed like a carb venturi, and it's straight through, you can look all the way through it. Apparently it's got a deep chambered rumble but gets louder with more throttle since it's straight through.

Basically wondering who all has tried a chambered muffler like a Flowmaster 40/44 or a muffler similar. I'd rather not have to buy another muffler and like to use the one I have since it's not in use. I want a good sound with straight through performance with tolerable drone, some is fine but not to the point where it hurts the ears after a while.

Assuming your Hooker mufflers are 2.5 in/out center/center, have you considered having one welded on before your magnaflow for two inline mufflers? Or maybe even swap out the magna and do two Hooker's inline (lol).

I would assume (but don't know for sure) that the 40 probably wouldn't be that much different than what you have now with the Magnaflow as it's 13.5" muffler.

I'm currently running the Magnaflow 18" and I love the sound. You def. can hear it but it's more subtle than the 14" (I ran a 14"on my truck).

Not sure about other mufflers, although I did just pick up a Delta Flow Series 50 muffler to replace my Magnaflow.

I thought about the two inline but I think that'd make it too quiet, I mean it's gotta have a decent amount of sound to it. I know a guy who has a Mustang 5.0 (old 302) and he has Aerochambers and Dynomax Bullets on it to control drone, and it's not all that loud, and the engine is mildly built, with headers and no cats.

So if I were to do inline, i'd get something like a Bullet to keep it loud outside but quieter inside. Also the mufflers I have are 2.5" in/out offset/offset, to fit a Mustang. I can make it work, just flip it sideways and the tailpipe bend will actually be less extreme.

Thinking about trying a Bullet first with the Mag, see if that works. If not, then try the Aerochamber. I don't want a Flowmaster, only ones i'd consider would be the Super 40 or 44, the longer 50 and 70 series don't flow as well as the 2 chamber Delta Flows, and the Aerochamber outflows them all by a mile.

I'm in love with my flowmaster super 44. Hardly any drone and its not extremely loud but it'll put a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel.

I had a super 40 for awhile, sounded great but was a little loud for most peoples taste, and droned on the freeway. I have a magnaflow on now, and its much more reasonable volume wise, and doesnt drone nearly as bad. I also notice better throttle response and gas mileage with the magnaflow, probably from the increased backpressure, the flowmaster was way to free flowing. I also do have the v6, so it might be different on the 4.7

i have a 18 magnaflow welded up and the stock resonator, and it still sounds great low drone but your taste in exhaust tone maybe different. a lot of people have told me they were surprised how quite it was in the cab, but you definitely hear a deeper tone

I have a Flowmaster 50. I like the sound of it. Once you crank and it fires, you can tell something is up . At idle you wouldn't know and then when you stomp on it you hear the thunder.

Not sure if I agree with that, Flowmasters use chambers that are welded plates, a design from the 80's, Magnaflows use a perforated tube, straight through like a Thrush or Cherry Bomb glasspack so they have little to no backpressure. The Flowmaster tends to make less hp but about the same torque or a little more low end.

Look up the Aerochamber, there's pictures and maybe videos showing the inside, it's got chambers but it's a straight through muffler also. It's got characteristics of both Magnaflow and Flowmaster, sound is more like the Flowmaster but it's got a smoother tone to it, so it's in between. It actually sounds a lot like the Spintech 3000 series (Sportsman) if you know what that sounds like.

Flowmaster Super 40/44 are much smaller mufflers than your Magnaflow- a 44 is about 13" L x 9.75" W x 4" H - http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/?page_id=451&partno=942548 - so they will be louder than your muffler. The Flowmasters also drone, I know this because I just took 2 Super 40's off my Cobra.

I actually told my girfriend that the 40's weren't loud enough for me and I was forbidden from doing anything to make the Cobra louder. So what did I do? I replaced the 40's with SLP Loudmouth mufflers (wake the dead loud!) and she never noticed a difference until I told her I did it.

The moral of that story is that you don't listen to what women say when it comes to exhaust, tell the wife that the 4Runner is going to stay the way it is and she needs to deal with it.

I'm not familiar with Aerochamber, but I'm going to have to check them out now.

I have the Magnaflow, but don't like the loss of the low end with it. Ironically, I was running the Magnaflow with an Injen intake and it had some great low end. But the Injen kept throwing a code so I swapped the Injen for a K&N. Now to get a better muffler...

I had an 87 LX 5.0/T5, had BBK shorties, offroad H-pipe and Borla catback. It was a fun little car, plenty of power for a 3000lb car. I sold it, had lots of rust and woulda taken too much time and money to fix. Maybe someday i'll get another fox, when the kids are older and I have money and free time again.

Honestly I know I'm probably going to catch some crap but I just put on a 38$ rumble muffler from autozoe on my v8 it's like a Wana b Flowmaster 40 but surprisingly sounds really good I'd say close to a Flowmaster nice low rumble but levels out on the highway and that's without the resignator there is a little drone but a lot less than I thaught there was going to be for the price 'm sure with the stock resignator there would be none but I'm really happy with it nice upgrade for few $ and couple hrs of welding if anyone is wondering 2.5 and center and offset can't remember wich I think input was center and a 18inch tailpipe section
Less than 50 for everything if your welding i used couple small chunks of rebar they slid nice and tight into the old rubber hangers tacked one to pipe and 1 straight to muffler if your getting rid of the resignator u will need another 18 inch 2 1/2 tailpipe section i had a tip and it was perfect sticks out may b half inch past stock bumper not sure how it would sound on a v6 probably just as good the wife wasn't as excited as I was but is ok with it mine was nice and quiet but my father inlaw lost his muffler so I got my excuse to transplant my stuck muffler on his trailblazer and get a new 1
