Decided not to install DAYSTAR spacers

Probably gonna catch flaming hell from the old timers for starting yet another thread on the subject of lifting/leveling my 4Runner, but I can take it. :argue:

I just went out to visit my tire guy because I still couldn't decide which tires I wanted to go with. Told him I had a set of Bilsteins to put on and the DAYSTAR 1.5" spacers for the rear and wanted to go with P285's on the stock rims. He told me they would likely rub even with the lift. He could see the dubious look on my face, so he decided to prove it to me. He drove my runner into the back and had a guy pull my left front wheel and mount a 285/70R17 he had in stock and air it up just enough to seal to the wheel. Turned the wheel and sure enough it rubbed pretty bad and would rub even with the front set 2.5" higher. Yes, I know I could modify the fender well to prevent the rub but I don't want it bad enough to do anything more than suspension mods.

So, I'm taking it in the morning to get a set of Michelin LTX M/S2's in P265/70R17 installed and my Bilsteins all around with the fronts set to the .85" setting. I'm really tempted to try it at the 1.75" setting but am fairly convinced that's going to put me at a reverse rake, which I don't want.

How bad should I expect my headlights and/or fogs to be off?

Anyway, I threw my DAYSTAR spacers up in the classifieds if anyone is interested.

So I take it your "guy" went ahead and set the caster up as close to 4 as possible? No? Hmmm. Maybe he took 5 minutes to push the fender liner just a bit forward. He didn't do that either? Shame on him!

I'm just playing, relax! Seriously though, lifting a vehicle does require more than "just slapping some big 'ol tires" on. I know you have did your due diligence and now you are changing your mind and that's fine. It's your vehicle and you should do what you want. It will look good at .85 and drive just fine.

You will need to adjust your headlights down just a bit still but you know where to find the instructions so that's NBD. Fogs should be fine. Have fun with it!

I'm just playing, relax! Seriously though, lifting a vehicle does require more than "just slapping some big 'ol tires" on. I know you have did your due diligence and now you are changing your mind and that's fine. It's your vehicle and you should do what you want. It will look good at .85 and drive just fine.

You will need to adjust your headlights down just a bit still but you know where to find the instructions so that's NBD. Fogs should be fine. Have fun with it!

I guess, technically, I did change my mind but I can't say it was 100% made up to begin with. In the back of mind have been potential UCA issues, fender mods, the icy glare from my wife that will just never get why men want bigger tires and leveled or lifted trucks (as if compensating for something else). I spent a few bucks on the spacers just in case but should be able to sell them. Tire guy would have worked with me to get things right and I am sure he feels the bigger tire he can sell me, the better for him. But he usually tries to give me good advice and direction to keep me coming back.

The proof will be after it's done but I feel like going this route will still look good and provide an improved ride and appearance with the least amount of potential hassle.

Man your going to regret it, your always going to think... I should have went bigger. The front fender mod is so easy to do, it not much work. Consider at least get the 275/70/17's, should not rub and no mod necessary.
I got the 285/65/18's a 32.6" tire very happy with it, but wish I did the 295/65/18's, a 33.1 with a bigger offset wheel. I was like you and wanted to play it safer with the sizing.

Better than never hearing the end of it from my wife whining that it's now too tall for her to get in and I have to put those fugly running boards back on it. There isn't a 275 out there that I like. Or, I should not say I don't like, but not one I would want for my purposes. My tire guy did bring up going with 18" rims and that opening up more options but I don't want to dump a bunch of money into rims when I like the stockers anyway.

The thing is, it looks a lot better to me now without the running boards. I would like to have it closer to level but I am addressing that regardless.

At .85 in the front, you won't have any UCA issues. There are some who have a full 3" coil over set up in front who still use stock UCA's.
