Yes, it's a faulty seat heater. It actually burned through the seat foam and has left a divot in the seat.

I called about it being covered under warranty and they said no. I'll have to replace the entire seat bottom, with new foam.

That's probably exactly what they will say, but if he didn't take the initiative to take it apart, how else would this have been found?

If he didn't take it apart and find that, they would have claimed it was "wear and tear"

1.) The tech could put a meter on it to read load resistance & determine there was too much resistance thereby finding a bad coil.
2.) Not if it was still within the warranty period.

Smarter thing to have done was just play stupid and say there was something wrong with the seat after he put it back together.

I would approach the dealer with this being more of a safety concern. That could cause burns to you or someone else. If the dealer still does not take you seriously, reach out to corporate. You can always file a complaint with the Consumer Product and Safety Commission. CPSC Home | CPSC.gov

This thread made me curious as for some time I was thinking about adding seat heater to my 4R.

A little digging through all posts by OP in different threads and times gives the whole story:

We picked up a 2010 sr5 2 months ago. 80k miles. Stock everything.

Bought the truck used and the cusion is breaking down on the outter edge. It's caused a lump in the seat and I think it's making the seat heater bunch up. The heater will burn your left cheek pretty good now. Just wanting to pull the cover up and see what's goin on under there.

Previous owner had installed seat heaters and Katzkin leather upgrade. My driver seat is now lumpy and the seat heater will burn your @$$ when on. Goin to attempt to pull the seat and skin, and see if they heater is bunched up, causing the lumpy pad and burning.

It's a 2010 sr5. The leather and seat heaters, we're aftermarket install by the previous owner. During an oil change, we mentioned the issue and they told us they would not cover it under warranty.

good sleuthing! personally wouldn't judge that as representative of all aftermarket installs, however.

Makes sense now as to possibly a bad install or faulty aftermarket heater.
Also, why it would not be covered under warranty. (refer to first sentence)

I have mine to install yet and I still will. Who knows what kit was used and with the adding of leather... just not sure. I think if it was a big problem there would be more posts.
