Ya i guess people aren't looking all that hard. I found mine from a marine store in Texas, got it to my door for $8. Keep the lid in the glove box, but haven't put it on since I installed.

I'm not going to do a deck plate but I need to ask this question.
What keeps the water out when driving on the highway in a pouring rain storm?
The filter HAS to be getting wet and the dirt on the filter HAS to be drying into a hard crust that reduces air flow.
Something else to think about. The stock intake hole is bigger than the tubes from the air box to the throttle body. The engine can only draw in the max air of the smallest tube.
More importantly, the later year 4runners had this stupid choke tube inside the fender. Remove it and gain some power for free.

You would close it when ever you are near water of of its raining. I'm sure not a lot of water would make it in but that's what I would do.

I'm not exactly sure what keeps the water out, maybe since its offset from the grill, and there isn't a direct path to the hole. I check my air filter every month at least, and have't noticed any extra dirt and/or caked on gunk. I'm sure it doesn't do much of anything to performance, but I drank the Kool-Aid when I first got on here so I did it. :beer:And so far nothing negative has happened because of it.

i did the mod and keep the lid under the passenger seat. when i first did it over a summer it would rain and i would put it in just to be safe, but now i dont, even is a real rain storm and out puddle hunting and mudding. but i do put it in when out on dirt roads for a couple days out camping and stuff. and every couple washes i check on the filter and it looks clean. no problems here. and can tell a difference with it in and out with the flowmaster. but then again the whole front of mine is open.

I'd be interested to see if removing this thing actually helps air flow. That choke tube could be accelerating the flow into the airbox, hence the 'choking'. I'm thinking about rigging up some kind of ram-air setup with that tube.
My brother once used a section of dryer vent tube to route a tube to the front fog light hole (and removed the fog light) on an 87 mustang GT (think about the circular fog lights on front air dam). I wonder if something like this might work on the runner.
did you ever look into whether removing the choke from the inner left fender makes any difference one way or another?
