Defective Paint and Peeling Clearcoat!

Hello All,

I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited in red salsa pearl. I have had it now for a year and started taking the time to really detail it with my PC 7424XP. Unfortunately, I have what looks like peppered white marks and spots all over the hood and roof area above the windshield. The clear coat is flaking off on the roof. The sides and back area are in great shape. I have clayed it then compound, polish, and wax, but no such luck in getting rid of the spots.:ybrick: Someone recommended light sanding with 1500, 3000 grit sandpaper then polish, so I tried this and it didn't work.
Has anyone else here have the same problem with their paint and clearcoat? If so what have you done to correct it or would it come down to just taking it to a paint and body shop?
I welcome any suggestions and tips.

It looks like is is time for a repaint to me. It must have not been in a garage or waxed much before you got it.

Are those pictures after you buffed it with a wheel or a DA and compound? If not, then you can do that. Wet sand first with 2000 grit until the marked go away, then polish with a rotary buffer or a DA (little safer). Obviously you are without clear in those areas but it should look better than that. If that doesn't work then you need to repaint.

Did you buy this new?? Was there always good wax on the car during it's lifetime. A car that's in the sun a lot that's not properly waxed...the paint can be permanently damaged in very short order. Your vehicle is now 7 years old. Either live with it or get it repainted.

I dont think the original owner kept it in a garage either. Unfortunately I am not able to garage it either. I do keep it washed weekly and waxed.

Yes, these were taken after claying, then buffing with Meguiar's 205, 105, finally wax. I'm thinking repaint is going to solve my problem. Flaws like this in my T4R drive me crazy:ybrick:

Not at all, this is the worst weather for our rides! It's hot, humid, rainy, and I live close to the water which doesn't help with the salt.

the possible things it could have been is tomething sandblated it and over time it got worse, something got sprayed on it and over time it got worse or it was repainted at one time and it had moisture under the paint and over time the moisture finally broke through and got worse.

I bought it used at a local dealer. It was traded in by the original owner. I don't know how well the original owner took care of the body, but I have been caring for it the right way since I bought it last year.

I was thinking on those lines too! The way it looks starting on the hood and then over the whole roof area like something sprayed it. The sides of the vehicle and rear hatch is in great shape with the exceptions of a few minor scratches that can only be seen up close.

Salsa Red Pearl Paint Peeling

We have same problem with 2007 4Runner. Clear coat peeling off hood and roof. Toyota has a paint recall but they are telling me mine does not fall under recall. They stated recall is for white models only.

I also have an 06 in Salsa Red Pearl and have the same issue. Once the clear coat is gone the only solution is to repaint.

It is, but the recall is for their "White Blizzard Pearl" which does have a clear coat.

2005 grey here. Hood was shot so I picked up 2 part clear for about $80, sanded and shot the paint on. I'm not the best painter, and I was worried it would look too new, but I got just enough orange peel to match the 15-year-old factory paint on the rest of the car. Was a 3 hour job.
My roof is way shot and my tailgate is getting there but I've been lazy. Took about 1/2 quart for the hood and I'm afraid I'll run out on the roof if I start that project.

My wife's 2011 Rav4 was covered under that recall. It wasn't just the clear peeling though. The paint was flaking off and leaving only the primer showing. It was horrible. The shop that painted it had to strip it all the way down to the metal and repaint almost the whole car. They kept it over a month. But it looks really great now.

I think the white they're covering is called Pearl White Metallic, or something similar. My wife's 2011 Rav4 has that and we just got it back from being repainted courtesy of Toyota. And that particular paint is a three stage paint according to the owner of the shop that repainted it. Not sure what a 3 stage is but that's what he called it.
