Unfortunately I don't think it's Demello's call on this anymore. They probably got a seize and desist order from whoever it is that has the patent.

Well I just googled searched patented kick out sliders. The company that popped up, well I don't really wanna promote their business here but they have a patent for 2 stage rub rails (kick out sliders). They're not a vendor here so I don't wanna break any rules here on the forum.

Anyways, I'm not very legal minded here. But what's the problem in putting a light to the situation. I'm curious and I want to know. Patented 2-Stage Rub Rail, huh... The only reference I found was Metal Tech 4x4. There, I said it. Sue me.

I'd put my money on MT, the transition between the forward rail and bump out are pretty similiar IMHO...

You know, you got me thinking. A quick google of "kick out" or "bump out" will yield a multitude of manufacturers for these type of sliders. I think it's the "stage" part that's in question. Demello has 3 horizontal support pieces, hence 3 stages (my pics on page 2) verses MT 2 stage. So you may in fact be correct.

All BS as far as I can see. There are lots of sliders that look similar when it comes down to it. The other company doesn't appear to even make them for the 4R.

I agree with you, but unfortunately DLak is right. MT is gonna get there way. It would cost more than it's worth for Demello to fight it out in court.

The Demello kick out sliders are meant for the fjc. Mt has plenty stuff for the fjc. On Demellos web site they didn't advertise for the 4r. The only way we found out about it, is when Mrgrimm posted it installed on his 4r. Mt has Budbuilt on their site as browse/other manufactures and not Demello. Hmmmmmmm what do think about that. My guess Budbuilt will not be charged.

I know a lot of people are unhappy this is happening, but look at the two. If it were your product, and your patent, what would you do? If nothing, then there was no reason to get a patent in the first place.

Ya I like the Demellos myself, but this is the nature of doing business. I would be willing to bet that if Demello had not made a nearly identical copy that MT would have never batted an eye at them.

If you guys really want these, I would suggest emailing MT with multiple requests for them to make some for a 5th gen. They might just do it.

I do see the similarity. Well things are done for a reason. What else can be said. Oh well, just have to deal with it now. Glad I got my order in just at the right time. Maybe I'll auction mine off to the highest bidder. Nah, just playin, I wouldn't do that and lose out on a limited edition of demello sliders. :redbrick:

I think what I was saying earlier is that a lot of sliders look the same - they serve the same purpose and attach to the same place. They aren't complicated pieces of machinery with unique, ground-breaking designs. There are subtle variations in all of them whether they're straight or have areas that "kick out".

Look at the side-by-side comparison pictures on Rocky Road's website - the only big difference you can see is a 45deg front to RR's vs the "other brand's". (BTW, I'm not saying anything negative about RR)

Getting a patent when there's such a small variation is a bit silly in my humble opinion - especially when you don't make the product to fit the same truck. I know, it's not my product and not my money. :infidel:

Makes me think of the whole "McDowells" vs "McDonalds" thing in Coming To America:
"They have the golden arches, we have the golden arcs. That have the Big Mac, we have the Big Mic. Both have two patties, special sauce, cheese, lettuce, pickles & onions on 3 buns. The difference is in the buns - our buns have no seeds"

Maybe Demello should change the angle of their sliders by 2degrees, put on a front kick-out, or add a bottle opener so the consumer can choose to buy from a vendor that makes something to fit the truck they own! How about a winglet that helps reduce drag or helps you keep direction during a really deep water crossing? Horizontal stabilizer? Floats that deploy like an airbag if you get caught in a flood?

That's probably what bothers me the most - one company stopping another from making a product that they don't actually make themselves when there isn't a whole lot of variance in the product to begin with.

Rant over. Off to get my patent for a 5-tine fork that will revolutionize the way forks are used across the globe. :cheers:
